Everton: Fans laud link to Valencia ace Maxi Gomez

Many Everton fans have been lauding a transfer link to Maxi Gomez as the Daily Telegraph have reported that the Merseyside club are keeping tabs on the Valencia ace.

According to the outlet, Carlo Ancelotti’s team have made contact with the Spanish side with regards to the availability of the player, and Gomez will apparently be allowed to leave so that they can trim their squad going into the new 2020/21 term in order to cut costs.

Indeed, the £28.8 million-valued ace has a relatively impressive scoring record at club level, netting no fewer than 70 times and making a further 26 assists in 170 games in all competitions over the last few seasons, as per Transfermarkt.

These members of the Goodison Park faithful lauded the link on Twitter, with one EFC supporter even claiming that the Uruguayan international is the ‘closest we’ll come to ever replacing Lukaku,’ as the former Chelsea and Manchester United man managed to score 87 goals in 166 matches for the Toffees (via Transfermarkt):

Chelsea: Frank Lampard should shift attention to Lewis Dunk to solve defensive woes

Chelsea are on the hunt for better defensive players to help them in their bid for silverware next season.

The Blues have identified their backline as an area of weakness and are hoping to bring in reinforcements this summer. Football Insider has linked the club to a move for Brighton’s Lewis Dunk as Frank Lampard eyes up some new centre-back options.

Chelsea aren’t hesitating when it comes to their summer spending this season, as they’ve already recruited attackers Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. A highly-anticipated move for Kai Havertz is also due to be completed after Marina Granovskaia reached personal agreements with the German and his agent.

However, now is the time to shift focus onto how to improve the team’s leaky defence, which saw them concede the most goals out of the ten top placed teams this campaign. Kepa Arrizabalaga has been Lampard’s main issue, but with a report from The Times (via The Mirror) claiming Chelsea are looking to sell four defenders, a whole new back-line could be on the list.

The report highlights Marcos Alonso, Andreas Christensen, Emerson Palmieri and Kurt Zouma as those made available this window.

Dunk is currently valued at a friendly £18million, which is a much more appealing price that fellow defensive target Ben Chilwell, who will reportedly command more than £80m (via The Mirror).

The 28-year-old skipper has been almost ever-present in Brighton’s 2019/20 season, missing just two Premier League matches and three cup games (via Transfermarkt). The Seagulls finished seven points above the relegation zone after enduring a tough campaign, but surprisingly conceded the exact same amount of goals as Chelsea who finished fourth (54).

With the experience of leading his team plus staying calm under a lot of enemy fire, Dunk could be a great asset to Lampard’s defence. This season, the centre-back averaged more tackles (1.1) and blocks (0.9) than Zouma, who had an average of 0.8 and 0.5 respectively (via WhoScored).

As Reece James becomes more and more involved in the first team, the England international could also serve as a mentor for the youngster.

Additionally, whatever price tag Brighton settle on will likely be an affordable one, leaving money left over to spend on another defender or new goalkeeper.

Manchester United: Fans devastated as Red Devils will not meet Dortmund’s demands for Jadon Sancho

Talks between Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund to sort out a deal for Jadon Sancho have stalled.

That’s according to Sky Sports, as per @utdreport, who claim that Man United will not meet Dortmund’s demands for the 11-cap England international. However, the Red Devils are not ready to give up on trying to sign Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target this summer, despite missing Dortmund’s artificial deadline on Monday.

Sancho was the Bundesliga club’s top scorer last term, having finished the season with a total of 20 goals and 18 assists (via WhoScored).

United chiefs Ed Woodward and Matt Judge are frustrated that progress is so slow, although time is on their side as the transfer window won’t close until October.

The board have made it clear they are not prepared to pay Dortmund’s €120m (£108m) valuation, with Woodward insisting that he is not willing to pay over the odds. Nevertheless, they will have to splash the cash if they want to sign Sancho in the summer, or they may miss out on him altogether in the future if interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool resurfaces next year.

Naturally, many United fans slammed Woodward on social media, with one supporter tweeting “Woodward is finished” if he cannot get a deal done in time for the upcoming season. Several others branded the transfer news “awful” and “rubbish” in reference to the fact the club have been chasing Sancho for some time now, with seemingly no end in sight.

Glasgow Rangers: Gers set to pocket huge £13m+ windfall

As per Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers are set to pocket an extra £13m once their extended Europa League campaign finally draws to a close.

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the Gers will receive £2.4m for their second-place finish in the Scottish Premiership. That is peanuts in comparison to the wealthy Premier League, but it could still go a long way north of the border.

It is in European competition, though, that should prove to be the most lucrative. This report has stated they have already received a sum of £7m, which is guaranteed from UEFA’s distribution programme, but they are also set to pocket at least £13m when the Europa League is finished. They still have a second leg to play against Bayer Leverkusen, although they are 3-1 down from the first match.

The upcoming campaign is an important one for the club, but especially for Steven Gerrard. He has already gone two campaigns without a trophy, which is almost unheard of at Ibrox – he surely cannot go a third and expect to hold on to his job.

If this money can be used to improve his squad, though, then he has every chance of ending that drought. Ianis Hagi has already signed, costing £3m, whilst Calvin Bassey has arrived on a free transfer. That is a good start, no doubt, but there is still plenty of work to do to catch Celtic at the top of the table. These funds could be vital in helping the Gers do just that.

Opinion: Does lack of January signings show us Solskjaer not the long-term choice for Manchester United?

Manchester United were expected to make big splashes in the January market this window, but, alas, they failed to bring anyone into the club.

While that sounds a damning statement in some sense, the reality is things could not be going much better for United, who are still unbeaten under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and saw the club tie down striker Anthony Martial to a new deal just this week.

However, with the club struggling so much in the opening half of the season and central defence clearly still an issue for the Red Devils, does this lack of January action mean the club are not quite prepared to go ‘all in’ on Solksjaer? You could certainly interpret it that way.

The Norwegian has done a sterling job at turning things round at United, and he will no doubt remain positive and get the best out of his current crop, who so far have not let him down in any way, shape, or form.

Solskjaer though surely must notice that the club haven’t essentially backed him the market, and it could be a worry for the former striker as he looks to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.

While if he continues to bring results like he is it makes it ever harder for the powers that be at United to not appoint him, there will be a worry within Solskjaer, who will be desperate not to return to Norway in the summer.

United though might see their future with a more experienced head and well known name in world football, and the January window might just be a sign that they are hanging fire before making big squad changes.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Napoli: Jude Bellingham is in Ballon d'Or-winning form! England midfielder on fire again before ferocious Fede Valverde helps win five-goal Champions League thriller

The ex-Borussia Dortmund man scored a superb individual goal in Naples as they ran out 3-2 winners over the Italian champions

Jude Bellingham bagged his eighth goal of the season as Real Madrid ended Napoli's 13-game unbeaten Champions League streak at home, snatching a 3-2 victory in an enthralling encounter on Tuesday. The contest, in truth, could have gone either way, but Bellingham's virtuoso brilliance, coupled with a stunning Federico Valverde strike , saw off the Italian champions.

Napoli took the lead with their first chance of the night, as Kvicha Kvaratskhelia whipped a corner into the box, which Real Madrid goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga misjudged, and after the ball pinged off the crossbar, it fell kindly for Leo Ostigard to head into an open net.

But Madrid offered a response. Bellingham won the ball just outside the Napoli box, before feeding Vinicius Jr for a fine finish from a tight angle. The England international then put Madrid ahead shortly after with a magnificent effort, weaving through the Napoli defence before curling a shot past Alex Meret.

Napoli levelled things up again after the break, Piotr Zielinski smashing home from the penalty spot after the hosts were awarded a dubious spot-kick for a Nacho handball. Los Blancos found an edge as the game went on, though, and were good value for their winner as Valverde fired from distance, his 25-yard-effort hitting the bar before bouncing into the net off Meret's back. The home side pushed for a winner late on, but Madrid saw off late pressure to secure an important away win that leaves them with one foot in the Champions League knockouts.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from Stadio Diego Armando Maradona…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Kepa Arrizabalaga (5/10):

His blunder handed Napoli the opening goal. Was otherwise unconvincing, though did make a smart reflex save to deny Osimhen.

Dani Carvajal (5/10):

He was always going to be given a tough night by Kvaratskhelia, and that was the case, as the Georgian wound his way around the right-back all evening.

Nacho (7/10):

Unlucky to give away a penalty — it was never a handball. Turned in a solid showing otherwise.

Antonio Rudiger (8/10):

Engaged in a fine battle with Osimhen, which he won in key moments. Madrid never looked shaky with him at the back.

Eduardo Camavinga (5/10):

Handed a start ahead of Mendy at his less-favoured left-back spot. Booked early. Rightly removed after an hour.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Aurelien Tchouameni (8/10):

Controlled space effectively, and probably should've found the net in the first half. Has made the No.6 role his own this season.

Federico Valverde (7/10):

'Scored' the winning goal after an otherwise rather sloppy night on the ball. His ability to cover ground was vital otherwise, though.

Toni Kroos (6/10):

Pinged some nice passes, but never really controlled the game in his usual style. Needs a rest.

Jude Bellingham (9/10):

Assisted Madrid's first, scored their ridiculous second. He probably should have grabbed another, but a miss will do little to detract from another excellent performance from the Englishman.

Getty ImagesAttack

Rodrygo (5/10):

Struggled to get involved in the game, and often tried to do too much. He's yet to score this season.

Vinicius Jr (8/10):

Looked lacking in sharpness until he scored the Madrid equaliser. Had a few good chances after, and found a rhythm. He will be so important once fully fit.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Replaced Camavinga and made a crucial clearance late on.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Offered a solid shift off the bench, which is pretty much his role these days.

Joselu (6/10):

Struggled to get involved, but certainly had the legs to give Madrid life late on

Dani Ceballos (N/A):

Not enough time to make an impact.

Carlo Ancelotti (6/10):

Benched Modric, and opted to start Camavinga at left-back. Madrid controlled the game early, but lost it when Napoli offered more of an attacking threat in the second half.

Course-ready gear with a touch of football class

Joining forces ahead of The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool, Admiral Sportswear and Swedish golf specialists Macade present a collection of course-ready pieces inspired by their dual sporting expertise.

Blending Macade’s golf performance with the Admiral archive of patterns and designs, the collaboration is led by a Home & Away shirt, the former in a subtly striped Aubergine design and the latter in a two-tone Khaki/Blue colourway with orange hints highlighting the dress-code meeting collar.

The collaboration also takes into account longer days out on the course with a classic taped seam Admiral ¼ zip – matching shorts are, of course, on offer as well.

The last stop before the Clubhouse drinks is the Green Zip Jacket, the design of which is inspired by an archival Admiral piece produced for the US Golf Association in the 1970s. It’s no Masters-winning jacket, but the cut, colour, and subtle branding make this as good as any trophy lifted this week.

The collection landed on July 16, in perfect time for a debut at The Open, and now you can get your hands on it too. Exclusively available at Macade Golf, the collaboration ranges from £30.00- £95.00. Here’s a closer look at some of the items available:

'Lionel Messi is a god, but I'll get stuck in!' – MLS All-Stars explain what Argentinian icon can expect from new league after Inter Miami arrival

GOAL asked several MLS All-Stars about Lionel Messi adjusting to the U.S. and how players will defend him.

Lionel Messi has arrived in MLS. It's still hard to really believe, isn't it? On Friday, he'll put on an Inter Miami shirt for the first time for his debut in the Leagues Cup, kickstarting an American adventure that still feels surreal.

And it isn't just surreal to the American public, who are now preparing themselves for the Messi era. It's also come as a major lift to players across MLS, who will now get a chance to play with and against a player that many consider the greatest of all time.

Players across MLS are thrilled by the idea of facing off with the Argentine star, with many of the league's younger stars growing up idolizing Messi. Some of MLS' more decorated players, meanwhile, are excited about the idea of seeing another world-class star help elevate the league to a new level.

It won't be easy, though. Life in MLS has its challenges, even for Messi. He'll need to make some major adjustments if he wants to thrive in a league that is unlike any other in the world.

Ahead of the MLS All-Star Game, GOAL caught up with several players to discuss Messi's arrival and what it takes to adjust to life in MLS.

Getty Images'A pinch-me moment'

John Tolkin grew up idolizing Messi. As a left-footer himself, the New York Red Bulls and U.S. men's national team fullback studied the ex-Barcelona star growing up. In his youth, Tolkin was drawn to lefties, and what better left-footer is there than Messi?

Now a 20-year-old homegrown MLS star, Tolkin has a very real chance of facing the player he grew up idolizing. The Red Bulls host Inter Miami on August 26, and there's a very real chance that he goes head-to-head with Messi at some point in that match.

"I expect packed stadiums and a lot of security and a lot of pitch invaders," joked Tolkin. "It's pretty insane. My Instagram and Twitter feed, you can't miss that he's here. I think it's so good for the league and for the country just to try and grow soccer as it is.

"If I'm able to step on the field with him, that'll definitely be a pinch-me moment and I definitely won't believe it for a pretty long time. At the same time, though, I want to beat him! That would be pretty cool to say: I beat Messi."

AdvertisementGettyGetting stuck in against a god

Despite what he said above, Tolkin isn't planning on just standing there starstruck when the whistle blows at Red Bulls Arena. No, he's there to compete.

Several European stars have received harsh welcomes to MLS. David Beckham, Messi's new boss at Inter Miami, was famously clattered by Jesse Marsch, sparking a melee between the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA. Messi will, no doubt, get a welcome-to-MLS moment, at one point or another, from a player on a far smaller salary than him.

Tolkin isn't going to be two-footing Messi any time soon, though, and the hope is there are no brawls like the one between Beckham and Marsch. However, the Red Bulls fullback does say he plans on doing whatever it takes to slow Messi down.

"He's like a god," Tolkin begins with a laugh, "but I want to get stuck in, you know what I'm saying? I've really been thinking about that, how to approach that, but in the end, I want to win. If I have to make a tackle or a tactical foul here or there, it's going to happen!"

Twttier.comAn easy adjustment to American life

One of the aspects of MLS that is so enticing is the draw of American life. For superstars of Messi's caliber, the U.S. is a place where he can find some form of normalcy. We've already seen one example of that, as Messi was recently spotted at a Publix grocery store in a scene that would have looked much different in Europe.

While life in the U.S. can be so different than life in Europe, it can also offer players a unique feeling of home. That's what Atlanta United star Giorgos Giakoumakis has experienced since arriving from Celtic earlier this year.

"The Greeks and Americans have many things in common," he said. "We share the same cultural things and everything from the lifestyle and their sense of humor about everything. You can imagine that I even struggled a little bit when I was back in Scotland, but here I don't feel that.

"The people of the club also played their part because they helped me so much, so much. I will always be grateful to them because coming to other parts of the world is never easy. Even if you share the same culture, it's not easy, but they made it really easy for me and my family."

Messi will benefit from those same aspects of American life. Miami, in particular, has a large South American population that should make the Argentine feel right at home. MLS, as a league, also has such a strong Argentinian influence that many clubs even hold asado barbecues for team bonding.

Giakoumakis, meanwhile, has only limited experience with Greek cuisine in America as he's taking his time to enjoy the other food the U.S. has to offer.

"I can tell you maybe yes. [the Greek food in the U.S. is good], and maybe you're gonna ask another Greek guy and he says no," the Atlanta United star said. "I don't think the quality is the same, like the proper Greek, but that's something really objective! I feel that I don't need to try Greek food across the country because I'm here to try something different, but wherever I'm back in Greece, I'm going to eat only Greek food. That's a fact!"

GettyGet ready for the travel

Ask any player, past or present, that has arrived in MLS what their least favorite part of it was and you'll likely get the same answer. They're going to say the travel.

It's something that makes MLS unique because no other league in the world has to deal with anything like this. The trip from Miami to Vancouver, for example, is twice the distance from London to Moscow. North America is a big continent and, for many players, the travel schedule can be overwhelming.

Fortunately for Messi, the league has gotten better with travel. He surely won't be sitting in economy seats next to the general public. Still, there's no way to make six or seven hour flights an exciting part of the job.

"Oh, it's the travel," Giakoumakis said. "Not that much nowadays, but before, they didn't have any charters so they had to fly for like four days when they were playing away games! Especially like Atlanta to LA, it's a long flight."

Messi is obviously used to long flights, having spent his entire career flying from Europe to South America for international games. Miami's location probably played some part in his decision, as it'll make the trips back to Argentina much easier as he looks to prolong his international career.

It's not just the travel that will surprise Messi, though, but what he walks into once he lands.

Rashford can't be stopped! Winners, losers & ratings as Man Utd survive FA Cup scare against Everton

The England attacker was the star of the show once again as the Red Devils overpowered the Toffees at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford has done it again!

The 25-year-old forward was the hero for Manchester United, powering them to a 3-1 victory against Everton in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford on Friday evening.

The England international ensured a positive start for his team as he exposed Ben Godfrey on the wing before sending a dangerous ball towards the back post for Antony to slide in the opening goal.

It was his good footwork that resulted in United's lead being restored, too. He sent the ball into the box early in the second half to catch Everton goal scorer Conor Coady off guard, resulting in an own goal from the defender.

Everton thought they had pulled level once again through Dominic Calvert-Lewin but VAR put an end to their celebrations. Rashford, as the architect of all of United's good work, then put an end to any of the Toffees' hopes of getting a draw when he finally got the goal he deserved, converting a late penalty to put the game beyond doubt.

United are now on a seven game winning run and Rashford has been pivotal to that, having scored in each of his last five matches for the club.

Below, GOAL takes a look at the winner and losers from an entertaining cup tie at Old Trafford.

GettyThe Winners

Marcus Rashford:

Rashford's renaissance continues! The England international maintained his excellent form with another strong performance. He made easy work of Ben Godfrey down the left side to set up his team's opening goal. He was a danger throughout the match and his fancy footwork and dangerous ball in created United's second. To cap off a near-perfect night, Rashford made international teammate Pickford look silly, waiting for the Everton 'keeper to move before rolling his penalty into the opposite corner.

Demarai Gray:

He was Everton's brightest player throughout the game and the man most capable of causing a threat for the visitors. That was summed up quite well when he charged forward and blasted the ball in off of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The goal would have been just reward but sadly for the Toffees it was ruled out because he was marginally offside in the build up. If his side are to pull away from the relegation zone Gray is going to need to produce a few more performances like this one.

Alejandro Garnacho:

United's rising star came off the bench and made an impact as his burst into the Everton box ended with him being brought down and earning a penalty for his side. The youngster is making a case to be given more playing time at United and after Antony and Anthony Martial both underwhelmed once again, it may be time for Erik ten Hag to give him a proper run in the starting XI.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

David de Gea:

The goalkeeper gifted Everton their equaliser with a calamitous moment. As the ball was whipped in, De Gea stood up against his post and let it slip through his legs which allowed Conor Coady to rush in and knock it over the line. Much like his compatriot Kepa Arrizabalaga's error against Man City the previous night, it really was impossible to decipher what on earth he was thinking. At least it didn't cost his side in the end…

Anthony Martial:

A quiet and fruitless performance from the French striker as he often seemed out of sync with the rest of the United attack. Martial took too many touches on the ball and needed more time and space than any defence will afford him, making it far too easy to keep him quiet at Old Trafford on Friday. He needs to find form soon or he'll find himself slipping back down the pecking order.

Alex Iwobi:

The Nigeria international was stretchered off with a nasty looking injury following a challenge from Tyrell Malacia. Iwobi has been one of Everton's best players so far this season and he and coach Frank Lampard will be hoping for good news as a long-term absence would deal a huge blow to their hopes of crawling away from the Premier League's bottom three.

GettyManchester United Ratings: Defence

David de Gea (4/10):

He was hardly kept busy in this game but he completely buckled the one time United needed him to be alert.

Diogo Dalot (7/10):

The Portugal international was constantly available on the overlap for Antony but the Brazilian hardly ever used the option. Made a vital clearance to preserve United's lead.

Raphael Varane (7/10):

Looked strong at the back once again and comfortable on the ball but was hardly put under pressure defensively.

Luke Shaw (6/10):

Once again used at centre-back and looked comfortable alongside Varane. Harry Maguire will feel his time in the starting XI may well and truly be over with Shaw's resurgence.

Tyrell Malacia (5/10):

Made some wild challenges in this match and left a bit of a gap in the defence at times.

GettyMidfield

Casemiro (7/10):

A solid performance from the 30-year-old. He is always there to clean up in front of the back four and is such a calming presence for the Red Devils. They missed him after he was taken off and replaced by Fred.

Christian Eriksen (6/10):

Had a dangerous shot in the first half and was comfortable on the ball with his neat passing which helped set the pace in midfield and also carved out a few chances for his side.

Bruno Fernandes (5/10):

Not the best performance from the Portugal star. He opted for some fancy flicks when United needed him to keep it simple and he hardly had a huge impact on the game.
