Nemat, Jaggi keep Punjab at bay

Jharkhand cruised to 195 for three on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against the favourites Punjab

The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Jamshedpur06-Jan-2013
ScorecardIshank Jaggi scored an enterprising fifty•K Sivaraman

Chilly weather combined with a flat track often makes for slow, and sometimes dull, cricket. It was evident at the Keenan Stadium as Jharkhand cruised to 195 for three on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against the favourites Punjab. It wasn’t the most ideal surface for a knockout game, but you might want to give the ground staff some allowance for adverse weather conditions affecting preparation of the pitch. However, it was a no-brainer that the team winning the toss would opt to bat and try to put up a big score on board, especially with the match being a five-day affair. Despite poor visibility delaying the start of the match by half an hour, Jharkhand had no doubts whatsoever in choosing to bat.The slowish and dry nature of the pitch had forced Punjab, who have preferred to go in with three seam bowlers, to play two specialist spinners at the cost of a pace bowler. And they preferred to bench Sandeep Sharma, their leading wicket-taker of the season. Sandeep was not only nursing a niggle on his shoulder, but also was recovering from a twisted ankle. Even if he was fully fit, he might have still made way for legspinner Sarabjit Ladda, as Punjab coach Arun Sharma admitted. The legspinner outperformed his captain Harbhajan Singh by a distance. Had Ladda not got carried away after picking two wickets in quick succession after lunch, Punjab would have snatched the advantage from the home team. Instead, opener Rameez Nemat and the talented Ishank Jaggi managed to rescue Jharkhand from 97 for 3 and end the day with their noses slightly ahead. Only 74 overs were bowled as bad light stopped play early.Nemat, who starred in Jharkhand’s victory against Services last week that secured them a place in the quarters, was solid in defence. Though he is not technically as sound as an opener should be, he curbed his naturally aggressive instincts and respected good balls. It resulted in his being on the verge of a maiden first-class century. And had bad light not played its part, Nemat would have been celebrating the milestone instead of the prospects of sleepless night. While Nemat focused on rotating the strike, Jaggi showcased enterprise. While he cut both the spinners at will, his standout stroke was a back-foot flick against the spin of Ladda, which raced to the midwicket boundary. Jaggi, who was part of Jharkhand’s victorious campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy – domestic one-day competition – two years ago, put Nemat at ease after Manish Vardhan and mainstay Saurabh Tiwary had perished in quick succession.Earlier in the morning, Siddarth Kaul struck early for Punjab as he trapped Akash Verma plumb in front of the wicket off the last ball of the fourth over. After, Nemat, who moved to Jharkhand after representing Delhi in under-14 cricket, and Vardhan kept the Punjab bowlers at bay till lunch. While a decent Jamshedpur crowd had turned up to primarily watch Harbhajan, they were entertained by the batting duo’s occasional stroke-making.The day didn’t bring Harbhajan much joy. Punjab coach, Arun Sharma, said: “We let them off the hook after those two wickets post lunch. We should have at least picked five wickets and shouldn’t have let them score almost 200 runs. Even though Jaggi and Nemat batted well, we didn’t help our cause by being undisciplined early on during their partnership. It offered them a lot of scoring opportunities and they made use of it.”

'I'd love to add to my one Test cap' – McLaren

After receiving his second CSA contract McLaren knows he is being primed for a Test recall – something that’s been in the back of his mind for a long time

Firdose Moonda12-Mar-2013

Ryan McLaren is becoming a constant in the limited-overs sides, and wants to cement a Test spot as well•AFP

Ryan McLaren’s Test debut was memorable but not for anything he did. He was included in South Africa’s all-pace attack that was tasked with squaring the series against England in early 2010.They did the job emphatically and bowled England out for under 200 twice to ensure South Africa won by an innings and 74 runs. The nature of the victory may suggest McLaren played some sort of role but his was a bit-part.In the shadows of Dale Steyn taking a first innings five-for and seven overall, Morne Morkel finishing with the same match tally and Wayne Parnell debuting, McLaren bowled 13 overs all told and took one wicket. It was an important one because it was that of the top scorer, Paul Collingwood and it was brief glimpse into McLaren’s ability. For four years, there would be only those short, somewhat stolen moments because McLaren never nailed down a proper spot. Now, that could change. After receiving his second CSA contract McLaren knows he is being primed for a Test recall – something that’s been in the back of his mind for a long time.”I’d love to add to my one Test cap,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about and working towards very hard.” McLaren averaged 50.50 with the bat and 30.67 with the ball last season and has been included in South African recent A sides and limited-overs teams. He would bring to the Test XI a Shaun Pollock-like discipline and consistency as well as the ability to score runs in the lower middle-order. While it would seem only Kallis’ retirement would open a door for McLaren, he may not have to wait for that to make an appearance in whites. South Africa’s revolving door position – the No. 7 spot – is the only unsettled one and he could fill it. It has been used for an extra batsman so far but it could call for an extra bowler or an allrounder in future.Until then, McLaren has to bide his time in the other formats where he is finally being given a sustained run of matches. Prior to August 2012, McLaren had played 10 ODIs and five Twenty20s for South Africa but not much faith was invested in him. Albie Morkel was the preferred candidate and assembly line allrounders were fading out of fashion.McLaren became a substitute and was included in squads when there was a mild injury concern. Almost everyone knew that he was unlikely to play and he never did. Only recently, has team management seen real value in him.In recent months, McLaren has been seen in long consultation with Allan Donald as he worked on extensively on his bowling. The fruits of that have been obvious and he has taken 11 wickets in his last four ODIs. His use of the short ball has been exemplary, something he puts down to Donald’s influence. “Allan always encourages us to be more aggressive and that’s what I’ve been trying to do as well,” he said.As good performances mounted up, confidence in him swelled. McLaren now feels more secure as well. “I’ve been given a few more opportunities and I feel a bit more comfortable in the environment,” he said. “I’m just really enjoying it now under Gary Kirsten. He treats us all like adults and make us take responsibility for our own performances.”McLaren has always come across as mature and grounded, so much so that he would be happy to make way for Kallis at an event like the Champions Trophy because “it’s good for South Africa if Kallis plays as long as he can,” so it’s no surprise he is thriving in a grown-up environment. At 30, he is exactly that and hopes to have a few good years to offer South African cricket.McLaren has built up experience around the world, including a stint at Kent and at the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. This off-season, he will return to the IPL to represent the Kolkata Knight Riders and hopes to pick up new skills to take into his re-born international career. “It’s always helpful to play in different conditions and to share dressing rooms with players from around the world. I just want to learn as much as possible.”

Dravid happy to have Watson at the start

Rahul Dravid said Rajasthan Royals would be bolstered by the presence of Shane Watson, who is expected to join the team in time for the side’s second game against Kolkata Knight Riders

Shane Watson may open the innings for Rajasthan Royals with Ajinkya Rahane•AFP

Rahul Dravid has said Rajasthan Royals will be bolstered by the presence of Shane Watson, who is expected to join the team in time for the side’s second game against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8.”Watson brings a lot of quality to the team,” Dravid told the . “Last year, we missed him for the first eight or nine games. This time, we are lucky that way. If we can play to our potential, we should be able to do pretty well.” He also added that Watson may be promoted to open the innings with Ajinkya Rahane.Rajasthan had a poor campaign last year, finishing seventh in the points table. Royals coach Paddy Upton was upbeat about the prospects of the squad in the IPL this season. “It is essential to work out a fine balance between team and individual performance,” Upton told the . “Our focus is to play at our level best and deliver top performances throughout the season. We as a team provide space to our players to take their own decisions, judge their performance, and together we all help each other to execute these decisions on field. We try to not only improve the sporting skills in our players, but also help and groom their overall personality.”Rajasthan Royals’ fast bowler Shaun Tait, who played in six games last season, picking up six wickets at 25.16, alluded to where they had gone wrong, “We were not up to the mark in the death overs during the previous season. I enjoy bowling at the death but plans work out at times, and some times they don’t. I would again enjoy bowling at death.”We hope for a top-four finish this time. We have worked on a few grey areas like death bowling and have few more options in attack. The likes of James Faulkner would lend us more bowling strength. We have a good relationship and we mix it up well and help each other.”Tait, who possesses plenty of pace but sometimes loses accuracy as a result, acknowledged that he is working on the issue. “I know I was erratic at times, but I have worked on this. My foot was popping out of the bowling crease, but recently I had improved in the Big Bash and Bangladesh Premier league. I plan to bowl a lot straighter and keep things simple.”

Ashraful surprises once more

Mohammad Ashraful’s career has been marked by surprising innings. This can be added near to the top of that heap.

Mohammad Isam in Galle10-Mar-2013

Mohammad Ashraful’s unbeaten hundred against Sri Lanka can be listed among his most special innings at this level•AFP

Mohammad Ashraful’s career has had several surprises: his debut century against Muttiah Muralitharan, the breathtaking 158 against India, or the wondrous century against Australia. It has always been about how he handled a top spinner or attack with ease, even at the tender age of 16.So the moment Ashraful broke his own record of highest individual Test score for Bangladesh, you wondered how a batsman who had averaged 13.22 in domestic first-class cricket earlier this season, could reach such a height?Unbeaten on 189 in Galle, Ashraful batted for little over eight hours, and faced more deliveries than any Bangladesh batsman ever did in a Test innings. He was mindful of all these records, as you would be after reaching such milestones. Ashraful had to play a more risk-free brand of cricket to reach this stage and you wonder how a naturally aggressive batsman could restrain his instincts for so long on a good pitch. He withstood several challenges in this innings. Ashraful was returning to the Test side after more than a year and was batting at No. 3, a position where he has previously averaged 8.25 and has not batted in since mid-2008.He hardly skipped a beat after Jahurul Islam’s dismissal before tea on the second day. Despite Anamul Haque’s sluggish batting at the other end, Ashraful continued to hit the gaps and ensure Bangladesh didn’t stop scoring runs. When Mominul Haque came in, he played with preservation in mind. They made a fetching pair, of similar height and build, but the combination was broken 43 minutes into the morning of the third day. It would have been easy for Ashraful to play a rash stroke, but this is where he caught many off guard. When Mahmudullah ran down the wicket to be stumped, Ashraful could have settled for an impressive half-century and a place in the team secured. However, as he said later on, he wanted to make sure Bangladesh were not going to subside. With Mushfiqur Rahim, Ashraful found a rhythm that he failed to produce with Mominul. The pair remained unbroken till lunch, Ashraful having reached his first century in over four years. Immediately afterwards, he let the captain settle, feeding Mushfiqur the strike. The surprise of Ashraful’s watchfulness stopped at that point, because as soon as Sri Lanka took the new ball, the shots began to flow. The square drive and the cover drive followed by some chips, clips and nudges against the spinners. Occasionally he would hang back and let the game flow around him. This was not Ashraful’s territory, but he was still there. Some of Ashraful’s comfort was due to Mushfiqur’s presence at the other end. The Bangladesh captain has completely come into his own after taking over from Shakib Al Hasan. He bats at a higher tempo and average, and often looks like a batsman in command of a partnership. He dominated this stand too, scoring 152 out of the 261 runs for the fifth wicket. Mushfiqur has been in form since the 2011 World Cup, scoring 15 points higher than his career average. After this season’s National Cricket League, it was easy to see why Ashraful was falling so far behind in the pecking order. There were promising players like Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque vying for spots, while his Dhaka Metropolis’ team-mates Mehrab Hossain jnr and Marshall Ayub staked claims with domestic runs. You half expected Ashraful to get out at some point during the day. But this was an entirely different batsman, one who batted an entire day for the first time in his Test career.Since he last scored a hundred in 2008, Ashraful had made just one half-century. When he was dropped in December 2011, there was hardly any hope of a comeback because Bangladesh cricket rarely does comebacks. Ashraful, with three centuries in different formats at different levels, found his way back, crawling out of the country’s ever-growing scrap heap of talented batsmen. There was a part of his innings that said a lot about his confidence. Ashraful made Angelo Mathews, the new Sri Lanka captain, employ a deep point, and invariably change that fielder’s position several times. He used width well, but he was also carving with the face of the bat so that the ball travelled downwards past regulation backward point, and he often hit it hard enough to beat deep point. His skill wasn’t a surprise, but it is how Ashraful lived to tell the tale that made everyone take notice.

FICA warning could hurt Pakistan league – Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, who is an advisor to the Pakistan Super League, has said FICA’s warning to players not to travel to Pakistan could adversely impact the tournament

Umar Farooq23-Jan-2013

Haroon Lorgat and the PCB are confident the Pakistan Super League will take place•Pakistan Cricket Board

Haroon Lorgat, the former ICC chief executive who is an advisor to the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has said FICA’s warning to players not to travel to Pakistan because of security concerns could adversely impact the tournament. Lorgat, however, said the reality of the ground situation in Lahore was different from common perceptions.”It’s unfortunate, there are many players who will be undecided and when a statement is negative, it doesn’t help,” Lorgat said of FICA’s comments. “It doesn’t help the confidence of some players. Fortunately there are many who have already committed and who are confident … they trust the assurance given by the PCB.”I think the statement is not against the PSL, it’s about the safety situation in Pakistan. While we understand that sort of a statement from the players association, I don’t think we necessarily agree with it. Here I’m sitting again, in Lahore, and I understand the situation on the ground in Lahore. There’s been a very good response across the globe by broadcasters who are keen and interested, and who are currently studying the detailed document. We are confident the league will happen on March 26. There’s a lot of interest from players as well. We know what the challenges are, it’s reality, but we will overcome those challenges.”Tim May, the FICA chief, had said most cricketers would heed the advice not to travel to Pakistan. “The security consultants came back and said that the risk of touring Pakistan in a cricketing sense is unmanageable,” he said. “I haven’t spoken directly to any players but the feedback we are getting from player associations throughout the world is that players are very appreciative and understanding of the advice. We can’t force the players not to go but I think you’ll find the majority, if not all, of current international cricketers will heed that advice and, unfortunately for Pakistan, not participate in this event this year.”The PCB said it did not recognise FICA and would not enter into discussions with them, dealing directly with the member boards instead. However, the Pakistan board did not reveal which foreign players had expressed interest in the PSL and said they would make an announcement once the pool was ready.”Our stated position on FICA is very clear, we don’t recognise them, so when we don’t endorse them it makes no sense to go into discussions with them at any level,” PCB chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed said. “As far as we are concerned we have no direct relationship with FICA.”ICC’s defined process is very clear, whether a player is approached directly or through the board, we have approached various boards but obviously without NOC we will not allow players to come. We have written to various boards and we are confident that players will come to the league.”The PCB has not announced a venue for the PSL but ESPNcricinfo has learned the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is one of the leading options and that the board is already in talks with the Punjab government regarding security. The PCB has also engaged an independent security agency to assist in the arrangements.Pakistan has not hosted international cricket since terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009. Since then they have had to play their ‘home’ matches at offshore venues such as England and the UAE.
