DRS research not shown to ICC board

Independent research that may have swayed the ICC’s executive board into approving mandatory use of the DRS was not shown at its meeting in Kuala Lumpur

Independent research that may have swayed the ICC’s executive board into approving mandatory use of the DRS was not shown at its meeting in Kuala Lumpur, despite being pivotal in convincing both the cricket committee and the chief executives’ committee of the technology’s accuracy.Wally Edwards, the Cricket Australia chairman, has revealed that the research on ball-tracking conducted by Dr Ed Rosten, an expert in computer vision technology, was left off the agenda of the executive board meeting, which concluded without the issue of DRS even being put to a vote due to India’s reluctance to accept its use.The ICC will now send a mission to India to show Dr Rosten’s research to the BCCI, alongside details of the enhancements made to Hot Spot, the infrared cameras used to detect edges that had their accuracy questioned after the 2011 Test series between England and India.Edwards told ESPNcricinfo that while other members of the board had also expressed some reluctance to go ahead with mandatory use of the DRS, he believed the tabling of Dr Rosten’s research may have resulted in a different outcome.”ICC had got some independent research done on the accuracy and all those issues. Now unfortunately they didn’t present that information to the board,” Edwards said. “India have agreed and the boards have agreed for ICC management to go to India and take all the information, take their presentations, take their technical support and talk to them over there.”India are willing to look at it, but they’re sceptical, and others are too – it’s not just India. I think it is part of the game for the future, but it’s a good time to review. Unfortunately if that presentation, or whatever it is they had, had been presented to the board it might have changed things. But we probably need another process, because people would have to go back to their boards and say ‘this is the latest, can we move from where we are to there’. Obviously Australia supports it, and we understand there’s still an error factor, but overall it’s better than what we had.”The accuracy of the DRS had been warmly endorsed by both the ICC’s cricket committee and chief executives committee, with Dr Rosten’s research a critical part of winning their approval. Following the CEC meeting, an ICC statement read: “CEC recommended to the Board the universal application of the DRS after being satisfied with the technology enhancements provided by new Hotspot cameras and the results of the independent research on ball tracking conducted by Dr Ed Rosten, an expert in computer vision technology. Dr Rosten had tested the accuracy and reliability of ball tracking in a recent Test series and concluded that the results were 100% in agreement with the outcomes produced from his assessments.”Much has been made of the back-room politics of the executive board, which appears to be far more consequential to the running of the global game than anything said in formal meetings. Edwards, however, said he did not find it unusual that the DRS was not tabled for a vote, based on his previous experience on various corporate and cricket boards in Australia. Instead, he awaited India’s response to the research they will be presented with.”Obviously if there are debatable issues we try to debate them. The more difficult the issue, the more you should talk,” Edwards said. “But in any boards that I’ve been on, there are very few decisions that will actually go to a ‘we’re going to count the votes here’ situation. Governance is one of them, but most others you’ll find a consensus that says ‘yeah right we’ll give that a run’. I didn’t find it unusual.”We knew where India stand on it, and at this point in time they’re not ready to change their thoughts. Those lines you see on TV, are they accurate, that’s the scepticism. It looks accurate, but from their point of view they are reluctant just to accept it as gospel. I think it is possible they’ll change, but we’ll have to wait and see how they go with this new information in India.”Previous attempts have been made to demonstrate the intricacies and accuracy of ball-tracking and other technology to the BCCI, notably via a planned trip to Australia during the 2010-11 Ashes series. On that occasion the visit was at first approved by the BCCI but then ruled out due to “scheduling difficulties”.

A recompensa chegou no segundo tempo.

We were 10-15 runs short – Dhoni

India were 10 to 15 runs short of a “safe” total against Pakistan in the first Twenty20 international, according to their captain MS Dhoni

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Dec-2012India were 10 to 15 runs short of a “safe” total against Pakistan in the first Twenty20 international, according to their captain MS Dhoni. India’s openers put on 77 runs inside 11 overs to give the hosts a solid base but Pakistan struck regularly after that, as India collapsed to finish on 133 for 9.”We should have got more runs,” Dhoni said. “We got a fantastic start from the openers but we couldn’t capitalise. We lost regular wickets and that hurt us. We should have got 10-15 runs more, 145 would have been a safe score.”India began superbly with the ball as the debutant Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up three wickets but fifties from the Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik set the platform for the visitors’ five-wicket win. India’s quick bowlers picked up all five Pakistan wickets to fall, but the part-time bowlers conceded 75 runs in 7.4 overs as Malik’s six off Ravindra Jadeja in the final over ended the game. Dhoni used up his fast bowlers by the 19th over, and had to bring on Jadeja for the 20th.”It was a gamble to finish the pacers early,” Dhoni said. “Malik and Hafeez were going well so we needed wickets. They were also going at a very fast pace so we had to take a gamble. The pacers did well, they left 10 runs for the last over which I thought was good.”Malik said Pakistan were struggling when Bhuvneshwar struck early but credited Hafeez for playing a “brilliant innings.” Hafeez said once the India spinners came on, Pakistan knew they had a chance. He also praised his bowlers for bringing Pakistan back into the game.”We wanted to do well at the start of the series,” Hafeez said. “[Mohammad] Irfan was the surprise package for us and everybody. We knew we had a good attack. We knew that [Umar] Gul is always good with the old ball. They restricted India where we wanted them to. Once the [India] spinners came on after the new ball, we knew we had a chance, we took a risk at the right time and it worked. It is a gift for the whole nation. It is Quaid day back home.”

All nine players who were nominated for two teams in next month’s Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa have opted to represent their respective IPL teams over their domestic sides. This includes the Trinidad and Tobago players Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine, who will now turn out for Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. The other players who have confirmed their participation for their IPL teams include Faf du Plessis, Albie Morkel and Michael Hussey (Super Kings), Mitchell Johnson (Mumbai), Brett Lee (Knight Riders) and Morne Morkel (Delhi Daredevils).According to the tournament rules, the IPL franchises which have acquired the nine players will have to pay US$150,000 as compensation to the ‘home’ teams of the players. The Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board may gain financially, but will be considerably weakened by the loss of three key players, all of whom are integral to West Indies’ limited-overs setup.Trinidad is among the six teams that will play a qualifying round, starting October 9. The other teams in the mix are Yorkshire, Uva Next, Auckland, Sialkot Stallions and Hampshire. The top two teams in the qualifying round will join the remaining eight sides for the group stage, starting October 13. The final will be played on October 28, in Johannesburg.Meanwhile Virender Sehwag, who led Daredevils to the top of the table in the league phase of the IPL this year, has stepped down as captain, with Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene taking over. Sehwag has been Daredevils’ regular captain for most seasons, except in 2010 when Gautam Gambhir was put in charge.Auckland Aces: Gareth Hopkins (capt), Andre Adams, Michael Bates, Brad Cachopa, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Ronnie Hira, Anaru Kitchen, Mitchell McClenaghan, Azhar Mahmood, Bruce Martin, Chris Martin, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Lou VincentChennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (capt), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Doug Bollinger, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hussey, Ravindra Jadeja, Albie Morkel, Suresh Raina, Wriddhiman Saha, S Anirudha, M Vijay, V Yo MaheshDelhi Daredevils: Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Virender Sehwag, Varun Aaron, Ajit Agarkar, Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel, Pawan Negi, Naman Ojha, Irfan Pathan, Kevin Pietersen, Andre Russell, Venugopal Rao, Ross Taylor, David Warner, Umesh YadavHampshire: James Adams, Shahid Afridi, Kabir Ali, Michael Bates, Daniel Briggs, Michael Carberry, Liam Dawson, Sean Ervine, David Griffiths, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Hamza Riazuddin, Bilal Shafayat, Glenn Maxwell, James Vince, Christopher WoodHighveld Lions: Temba Bavuma, Gulam Bodi, Zander de Bryun, Quinton de Kock, Neil McKenzie, Pumelela Matshikwe, Chris Morris, Dirk Nannes, Ethan O’Reilly, Alviro Petersen. Australia’s captain Michael Clarke had stated that the Twenty20 Champions League would be an equal impediment for both his side and South Africa’s ahead of their Test series down under in November. However the announcement of the squads for the club competition has shown that in this case, one side is slightly more equal than the other.
Seven Australian Test players have been chosen for T20 duty in South Africa: Ben Hilfenhaus and Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings), David Warner (Delhi Daredevils), and Pat Cummins, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Starc and Shane Watson (Sydney Sixers). The five South African Test players to be involved will be Morne Morkel (DD), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), Jacques Kallis (KKR), AB de Villiers and Jacques Rudolph (Titans).
Two likely Australian Test players, Ed Cowan and James Pattinson, hold T20 contracts but were not chosen for their respective sides. Players participating in the final of the Champions League on October 28 will have little more than three days to change gears before South Africa’s tour match against Australia A at the SCG from November 2. The first Test begins in Brisbane on November 9.

Philander, Tsotsobe shine in squad workout

Vernon Philander scored his first half-century in South Africa whites as the second day of their drawn tour match against Derbyshire was dominated by bowlers

Vernon Philander scored his first half-century in South Africa whites as the second day of their drawn tour match against Derbyshire was dominated by bowlers. In complete contrast to day one, on which more than 400 runs were scored and five wickets fell, both attacks had success with the ball. The South Africans, led by Lonwabo Tsotsobe, took eight wickets in the morning session before Derbyshire picked up six in the middle period, as the tourists gave their lower order an opportunity to bat. Philander batted at No.7 and survived being hit in the nether regions by Ross Whiteley to post a good score and justify the claim that he could become an allrounder.Apart from a stoic contribution of 26 from replacement gloveman Thami Tsolekile, South Africa’s other fringe players and bowlers struggled with bat in hand. Faf du Plessis was out in the first over, missing a straight one from Mark Footitt, who took four wickets.Robin Peterson’s full-blooded cut was caught by Matt Lineker, who dived full length at gully to stop a ball that was destined to find the boundary. Morne Morkel shuffled across his stumps and was trapped lbw, Imran Tahir offered a more straightforward chance to Lineker and Albie Morkel top-edged Jonathan Clare.Tsolekile withstood the damage and lasted 61 balls. He showed significant composure in an innings that could have ended much earlier, given the movement on offer. Eventually, he was done for by it and bowled by South Africa-born Tim Groenewald.Philander had an easier time at the crease and played shots freely. Despite being hit and appearing in some pain, he has been declared fully fit. Dale Steyn partnered him and made a score of substance for the first time on the tour.In the morning session, Steyn bowled only five overs as Tsotsobe stole the show with his four scalps, including two in three balls. Tsolekile also enjoyed a good outing and pouched five catches. It was Philander who struck in his first over when he removed Usman Khawaja. The Australia left-hander may have seen the day as an opportunity to nudge his national selectors ahead of South Africa’s tour later in the year but only added one to his overnight score of 36 before inside-edging a good length ball through to the keeper.Derbyshire’s other South Africa-born player, opening batsman Wayne Madsen was next to go. He feathered a leg-side Morne Morkel delivery to Tsolekile, who took his third catch. Tsolekile took two more, off Tsotosbe’s bowling, after Graeme Smith caught Dan Redfern at slip, also off the left-armer.Tsotsobe was, before today, best remembered in England for a petulant display when he represented Essex last season. It was during a game against Derby that Tsotsobe bowled off a few paces and behaved in a disinterested fashion, before being released from his contract and told to return home.Instead of continuing in that vein, a more disciplined Tsotsobe turned up this time, bowling a consistent line and length and troubling the batsmen with subtle movement of the ball. More impressive than that, was his evident commitment. Tsostosbe is on his second tour with the Test squad and, although he has little chance of breaking into the starting XI, he appears to have made progression with his bowling, particularly in the pace department.Smith took another good catch, after it seemed the ball had gone past him at slip, off Tahir’s bowling. Allan Donald, South Africa’s bowling coach, will be pleased that Tahir did not bowl a single no-ball in the Derbyshire innings after struggling with overstepping in the previous two Tests.Whiteley was the only Derbyshire batsmen to make an impact and struck a composed half-century. The highlights of his knock included three sixes off Robin Peterson, who was the most expensive of the South African attack.

Clarke considers all-pace attack

Mitchell Starc and Ben Hilfenhaus may both be included in a four-man pace attack at the Gabba as the pitch maintained its green tinge on Thursday

Mitchell Starc and Ben Hilfenhaus may both be included in a four-man pace attack at the Gabba after Australia’s captain Michael Clarke was greeted with a pitch maintaining its green tinge on Thursday. In the lead-up to the match, the Australians had indicated that the offspinner Nathan Lyon was likely to play in the first Test against South Africa, starting on Friday, but he is now no certainty.”I was expecting to have a decision for you today but the wicket has changed a little bit since yesterday,” Clarke said. “I need to wait and see if it changes any more come tomorrow morning. The weather plays a big part as well, if it’s overcast compared to sun shining.”The forecast is okay for the week but I really want to wait until tomorrow morning to give ourselves a really good look at it. At this stage we’re still deciding do we play four fast bowlers or do we play three fast bowlers and Nathan.”Peter Siddle and James Pattinson appeared to be the two certainties in Australia’s pace line-up as both men have enjoyed plenty of Sheffield Shield bowling over the past six weeks. Starc and Hilfenhaus were both at the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa and have had limited red-ball preparation, and while Clarke said the selectors had discussed which fast man to leave out, he was not willing to reveal the decision while the possibility of including them all remained.”We’ve certainly spoken about it, that’s for sure,” Clarke said. “But until I’ve thought about what the best attack is or if we’re going to go three quicks or four quicks, I don’t think it would be fair to the players if I told you that. I think it’s important that we wait and see what conditions we’re faced with tomorrow morning, give ourselves the best chance to have a look at conditions, and then we’ll work out what the best XI is.”Hilfenhaus is Australia’s highest-ranked bowler in the ICC Test rankings at No.6 in the world and has been one of the team’s most consistent performers since returning to the side against India last summer with a reworked action. Earlier this week, he said he was not viewing Australia’s net sessions as a bowl-off with the other members of the attack, and he was simply enjoying being able to work with the red ball again after a period of short-form cricket.”I don’t see it as fighting for a place,” Hilfenhaus told ESPNcricinfo. “The conditions are what they are and the selectors have to make a decision on what they want for the conditions, what make-up they believe will win a game of cricket. You’re never comfortable being left out. All I can control is my preparation and doing all I can to make sure I’m as ready as I can be.”It’s actually nice to be able to run in and try to bowl the same ball twice, rather than worry about bowling six different deliveries. It was nice to get back in the groove [during the Sheffield Shield match] last week.”If Australia take an all-pace attack in on Friday it will be their first Gabba Test without a specialist spinner since November 2008, when they beat New Zealand with Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson sharing the workload. On that occasion, Clarke and Andrew Symonds were only required for a few overs of part-time spin.
