ICC bats for its 2.5-metre rule

The controversial clause in the Decision Review System (DRS) that reprieved Ian Bell during the tense England run-chase against India in Bangalore was introduced into the rules because of players’ doubts over the accuracy of the ball tracker technology. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo in Bangalore, ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, said, “The rules and protocols for DRS were designed by experts with much thought. The Bell example applies the 2.5m rule which, in my view, accommodates the scepticism that some have with predictive technonolgy.”India’s scepticism about the DRS has grown following the incident involving Bell, the first time the team asked for a referral in the World Cup. Television replays, which were displayed on the giant screen of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, appeared to show that the ball had hit a forward-stretching Bell low on the pad with the ball in line with middle stump. Bell had begun to walk off, but umpire Billy Bowden did not declare him out because the distance between the point of impact and the stumps was shown to be 2.5m.MS Dhoni criticised the Bell decision, calling it an ‘adulteration’ of technology with human judgement, but Lorgat said it was not an accurate description of what transpired. “It’s absolutely not (adulteraton) – as it is there to support the umpire, not to overrule the umpire. The whole purpose of DRS is to avoid the error, not to seek a wicket or to reprieve a batsman. That’s not the purpose of the system, the purpose is to avoid an error that would result in gross injustice. The Bell decision was a judgement call for the umpire – if he didn’t have the DRS, we would have been arguing about how far down the pitch the batsman was. What we are trying to avoid through DRS is the bad decision, not to adjudicate on decisions that could go either way.Using the DRS in the World Cup, Lorgat said was, “to simply avoid the shocking error that can happen. And we do not want such errors in the World Cup.” Umpires he said would acknowledge this, he said, adding they were, “happy” with the DRS. “They can go to sleep at night knowing that had they made that one mistake, it can be rectified. That would not have happened without DRS.”The rule about the distance between impact and the stumps had been put in place precisely because experts had said that the accuracy of the ball tracker – in this case Hawk Eye – begins to falter from that point. “In other words if the ball needed to travel more than 2.5m, then it is for the umpire to make the final decision as he sees it.”Dhoni had asked why the mark had not been stipulated at 2.4, or 2.6m, and Lorgat said that while, “You can set that mark wherever you want – Dhoni was saying 2.4 and 2.6 – but the experts have decided on 2.5 m, after which the umpire and not technology decides..”ICC General Manager, Dave Richardson, told Indian news channel, , that Dhoni should be aware of the rules before passing judgement. “There are a set of rules along with the Hawk-Eye to assist in making the decision when UDRS is implemented … Most of the time, a player is not fully aware of all the rules. If MS Dhoni is made aware of the specifications of these rules, then I am sure that he will accept the decision that was made.”Lorgat went on to say that regardless of the technology, the umpire had remained at the front and center of decision making on the field. “The umpire still has the authority to say, despite what I’ve heard and seen, I still don’t think that is enough reason for me to change my decision. It is for them to decide. That [DRS] has aided them, that does not overrule the umpire. That is a support structure we have put in place.”When asked whether the DRS would now be a constant in ODIs following the World Cup, Lorgat said, “No. A comprehensive review and recommendation can only be decided once the ICC Cricket Committee deliberates in May 2011. You can’t deny the progress of technology, either we embrace it or we reject it. I believe we reject it at our own peril.”The DRS was met with a lot of resistance when it was first introduced in 2008, but it has now enjoys what Lorgat calls a, “lot more support” across all Test playing countries other than India. Lorgat said, “Now, people are asking us, “Why is it not mandatory?” It is currently not because of the lack of available technology. We would also want all players and Match Officials to experience and embrace it fully.” He said there were, “commercial and contractual aspects related to its application” which is why the ICC had left the decision, “to the participating Boards.”The system had come into play in the World Cup because it was an ICC event but leaving it to bilateral boards was not unfair on the part of those countries which have embraced it, “This (the World Cup) is an ICC event and the ICC has decided to use it. In the case of bilateral series it is up to the Members to decide. Some claim this is not consistent and therefore not fair. I don’t believe so as the playing conditions would be the same for the two competing teams and it is still the subject of the umpire deciding.”Lorgat said the DRS was, “no more than a tool” to help the decision making the umpire. “By using DRS, the correct decision making percentage has improved by around 5%, from 92% to 97%. With such improvement how can we not support its use?”In the ICC’s DRS rule pertaining to the Process of Consultation, No. 3.3 (i), states that if a ‘not out’ decision is being reviewed on the ‘point of impact’ issue, the third umpire must tell the onfield umpire whether the ball is past 2.5m or not and then pass on the following information: the distance from the wickets of the point of impact with the batsman, the approximate distance from the point of pitching to the point of impact, and whether the ball is predicted to the hit the stumps. According to the explanation given on the ICC’s website, along with the 2.5m rule, should the distance between point of pitching and point of impact with the pad be less than 40cm, “the umpires are not obliged to follow the normal rules for using Hawkeye to determine whether the batsman is out or not and shall have a discretion in determining whether or not to overturn their original not out decision.”The ball tracker, like Hawk-Eye in this case, comes into play from the time the ball pitches and to the point of impact. That passage of information is then passed to the computer through multiple camera frames that help the tracker pick up on trajectory and make its assessment. The greater the distance between the point where the ball pitches and the point where it makes contact with either bat or pad, the more camera frames there are for the tracker to trace the predictive path. The shorter the distance, the less information is available to the technology to make an accurate prediction, which is why the 2.5m rule was brought into play. The Bell-Bowden incident has raised the issue of whether the third umpire should be able to instruct the on-field umpire to change his decision, as opposed to merely passing on information. The argument in favour says that the third umpire is the man who has both access and time to look at the replay and is also detached from the emotions on the field and in the crowd looking at the dismissal on a giant screen. The argument against states that giving the third umpire these powers will reduce the importance of the man in the middle.

England's understated craftsman

The battle for the 2010 Ashes was won on the playing fields of Chittagong. That is the extraordinary conclusion that can be drawn from the performance of Tim Bresnan

The battle for the 2010 Ashes was won on the playing fields of Chittagong. That is the extraordinary conclusion that can be drawn from the performance of Tim Bresnan, a man whose unassuming demeanour and appetite for hard labour transformed him into England’s weapon of choice for an MCG wicket that lived up to its dour reputation. By the end of a day that he cautiously conceded was his best in England colours, Bresnan had transcended the conditions to bowl England to the brink of their first series win in Australia for 24 years. That’s quite some achievement for a man who, at one stage on this trip, was the squad’s fifth-choice seamer, with Ajmal Shahzad close to a call-up at Adelaide, and Chris Tremlett eventually plumped for in Perth. Today, however, he became the go-to man – a bowler with the stamina, skill and accuracy to make something from next to nothing on a wicket offering little swing for James Anderson and no reward for an excellent spell of bang-it-in old-ball bowling from Chris Tremlett.”We’ve had a good day of Test cricket,” said Bresnan, with habitual modesty. “We’ve done a lot of hard work, hopefully we’ll do the rest tomorrow and wrap up this win. I don’t know if I’ve played a major part, but we’ve bowled well again, bowled well in partnerships, and it doesn’t matter who really takes the wickets, it just happens today is my day. It’s a very good feeling.”It suits Bresnan’s style to be under-estimated, because beyond the flat Castleford vowels lies a serious competitor, and one who has been at the forefront of England’s thoughts ever since his unstinting performances on the deathly flat decks of Bangladesh back in March. Though he claimed just seven wickets at 32.28 in the two Tests, his stamina alone in sapping humidity and on soul-destroying surfaces impressed Andy Flower, who recognised the value of a player who would never allow himself to hide behind excuses.”You use the conditions you get given,” said Bresnan. “You go around the world and you get these wickets and you’re expected to do a job on them. I’m not saying this one is anywhere near as slow and has less bounce than Bangladesh, because when it kisses through it kisses through nicely and you could actually bowl a bouncer on it. But today the pitch wasn’t doing a great deal, so we had to rely on our skill, and the abrasiveness that came into play.”That was very much the case on a pudding of a pitch against Victoria a fortnight ago, where Bresnan was the only England seamer to claim a wicket in 78 overs. Despite that, he maintained his discipline at all costs, attacked the stumps with a hint of reverse swing on a still-lush outfield, and conceded his runs at barely three an over. It was all the evidence that Flower needed to give the promising but expensive Steven Finn a break from the front line, and bring in a man who could not have been more ready for action.”The way we’ve been preparing, especially me and the lads who haven’t been playing in the series, we’ve played the warm-up games and prepared as if we were going to play,” said Bresnan. “Andy sat us all down and said: ‘Listen, I’d be very surprised if we go with the same team through five Tests’. Obviously with it being so hard fought and close together, we knew there would be a chance for at least two or three of us playing, so we had to prepare as if we were playing.”Subtlety is not a trait that one associates with a personality as blunt as Bresnan, whose reaction on seeing the MCG for the first time a fortnight ago was to say: “S’alright. Headingley’s bigger…” But he’s a tradesman who knows how to use his tools, and the manner in which he chiselled England into a formidable position in both innings could not have been more perfectly carried out. All told in this contest he has the figures of 28-13-51-5, figures that any fast bowler in Ashes history would be proud to sport on their CV.In the first innings, Bresnan’s alliance with Tremlett forced the crucial early breakthroughs after two dropped catches had taken the venom out of Anderson’s first spell. Second-time around, England were haemorrhaging runs at more than five an over when he entered the attack in the 11th over. It was hardly a calamity, seeing as they had helped themselves to a first-innings lead of 415 – an Ashes record for a team batting second – but nevertheless, there was a job to be done and it was undertaken with matter-of-fact precision and a significant dollop of skill. It took him no time at all to knuckle down to locate his length, which barely changes from one pitch to the next – full, flat and zeroing onto the base of middle stump. He’s quicker than he is given credit for – the MCG speed gun reckoned he was the fastest of England’s three pacemen in both innings – and he has the sort of stamina that invites the usual clichés about Boxer the Animal Farm carthorse. But each of his three wickets in 18 deliveries were created by a subtle variation on a theme – hooping reverse swing to sucker Shane Watson; fractionally low bounce for the “dirty drag-on” that bowled Ricky Ponting, and a curvy stick-in-the-pitch outswinger to lure Mike Hussey into a fatal poke to cover. If England’s own supporters under-estimated Bresnan, then it’s hardly a surprise. He barely featured in his Test debut at Lord’s in May 2009, a match made memorable by the four wickets in seven balls that were scalped by his fellow new boy, Graham Onions, and though he followed up with a three-for at the fag-end of the following match at Chester-le-Street, the game was long since dead in every respect, with the crowds absent and an innings victory in the bag.And yet, if there’s any team that knows Bresnan’s capabilities, it is Australia, who not only faced and failed against his heavy balls in the World Twenty20 final in Barbados back in May, but also watched him play a starring role in the 3-2 ODI series win in England back in June. His bowling on that occasion may have gone under-rewarded, but his cool under fire enabled him to withstand a frantic finale to the third match at Old Trafford, where his 14 not out from 15 balls enabled England to scramble to a series-sealing one-wicket win.”I do like being under the pump, I think,” said Bresnan. “I do like the big occasion, and I do like being under pressure – I think it brings out the best in me – so why wouldn’t it be on Boxing Day in Australia?””It didn’t take me by surprise,” said Watson. “I’ve played with him in one-day cricket for the past year, really. He can bowl very well. He swings the new ball, he gets a bit of bounce as well, and the way he bowled today was brilliant. It was what I expected he was going to do, because he’s a high quality player and a high quality bowler. His first spell was very good, the ball was starting to go reverse. The spell this afternoon was very highly skilled. It was a lot of hard work out there.”It wasn’t so long ago that Bresnan was the butt of a few jokes for the size of his waistline, and on one unfortunate occasion, he got himself into trouble with a feisty response to a jibe from a supporter on Twitter. But the song that the Barmy Army devised for him in Bangladesh – “we’ve had a Garlic Nan, we’ve had a butter nan… but our favourite Nan … is Tim Bres-nan…” – did not get an airing today, perhaps because it hardly seemed relevant for such a frugal performance. And that Spartan attitude extended to his assessment of an incredibly significant day’s play for England. While Watson admitted that the Ashes had already been lost by Australia, Bresnan kept ploughing the same furrow that has kept both him and the squad as a whole battle-ready all series long. “We’ve still got the three wickets to get, so I’ll describe that tomorrow – if we do it,” he said. “We’ve still got a lot of hard work to do.”

Can New Zealand avert another whitewash?

ESPNcricinfo previews the fifth ODI between India and New Zealand in Chennai

The Preview by Sriram Veera09-Dec-2010Match FactsFriday, December 10
Start time 14.30 (0900 GMT)
James Franklin provided a perfect end to the positive approach showed by New Zealand in the fourth ODI. Can they carry on in the same vein?•AFP

The Big PictureThe fourth ODI hinted at a New Zealand revival. Their approach was certainly different and refreshing. It was visible in their batting and bowling, and they were just about pinned down only because of Yusuf Pathan’s brutality. Their fans will hope that New Zealand continue with this positive approach in the final ODI. Despite being put into bat under overcast conditions in Bangalore, they weren’t circumspect. They didn’t focus on survival, as they had tried to do but failed earlier in the series, but chose to attack. It didn’t feel like a desperate attempt either – they never swung wildly – but a positive strategy to turn their fortunes around. Their bowlers too, nearly did the job, but were shoved out of the contest by a violent knock. They haven’t won an ODI in nearly four months and something had to give. This new approach might well be the right path to lead them out of the hole. For their part, India are likely to view the top-order collapse in Bangalore as an aberration and revel in the fact that the situation produced the best out of Yusuf, and raised hope of removing a weak-link in the lower order. They might also see their death-over bowling woes in the last game – 63 runs in the last five overs – as an aberration as it was Ashish Nehra, normally their best bowler in such situations, who gave away 38 in his last two overs. And even then, just like New Zealand didn’t account for Yusuf, India were blindsided by James Franklin.Pitch and conditionsThe good news is that Chennai, which had heavy rains earlier in the week, hasn’t seen a downpour since Wednesday. The bad news, though, is that the forecast suggests that it might rain on Friday.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
India:WWWWW
New Zealand: LLLLL
Watch out for…Is Martin Guptill on the cusp of breaking free from his old failing of throwing away his starts? Or is he still stuck in the same rut? He played a skillful knock in the previous ODI, using conventional shots as attacking options, but fell when set.Ashish Nehra is no Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis, of course, but he is a capable bowler in the end overs of an innings. He is the man MS Dhoni turns to during both bowling and batting Powerplays, and in the final overs. If he had got complacent – there is no evidence to suspect that – the fourth ODI would have been a wake-up call.TeamsNew Zealand could focus on one change: Jamie How hasn’t grabbed his chances and might be replaced by Kane Williamson, whose offbreaks provide another option. The case against Williamson, articulated publicly by former New Zealand batsman Craig McMillan, is that he is not a perfect fit for No. 3. The view is that Williamson slows down the run-rate as he is the type of batsman who needs time at the crease to get going. Is it just a perception? Can Williamson, given enough experience in that slot, change his game? Or is this not a good time to extend him that opportunity as the World Cup is around the corner? He could be pushed lower down the order, but would that role fit him?New Zealand (probable): 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Jamie How/Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 James Franklin, 7 Daniel Vettori (capt), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Andy McKayIndia, too, will probably make one change: they will most likely give Zaheer Khan a rest and bring back Munaf Patel.India (probable): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Saurabh Tiwary, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Munaf Patel, 11 Ashish Nehra.Stats and triviaNehra conceded 70 runs in nine overs in the last game. It was the ninth time he had leaked more than 70 in an ODI and he holds the dubious record of doing it the most times.Three other bowlers – Waqar, James Anderson, and Naved-ul-Hasan – have given more than 70 runs seven times. Yuvraj Singh took his 75th catch to dismiss Guptill in the fourth game of the series. Only six other Indians – Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, and Virender Sehwag – have caught more. Quotes”We will look at it as we do every game – to win it. I know that’s hard to say after losing so many games in a row but we still think we can do it. The batsmen showed how good they can be. If we get that performance again we hope our bowlers can do better.”

Wolves could sign their own Ruben Dias

Wolverhampton Wanderers could miss out on a move for Marseille’s Croatian centre-back Duje Caleta-Car.

What’s the word?

That is according to French reporter Ignazio Genuardi via Get France Football News, who claims that Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has scouted the 6 foot 1 defender ahead of a potential move to Villa Park.

Wolves reportedly offered Marseille £13m, just seven months ago, as per RMC Sport and he was considered a real target for the Molineux side.

Their own Dias?

With their Midlands rivals now in the race to sign the central defender, Bruno Lage must consider reviving the club’s pursuit of the Croat.

Caleta-Car is about to enter the final year of his contract and with no apparent sign of renewing, Marseille may feel pressured into selling him at the end of the season in order to acquire some decent money for the 25-year-old.

The £14.4m-rated Croatian has started just 59% of Marseille’s games in the league this season, though, in that fairly limited time, he has demonstrated exactly what his game is about – with his passing ability shining through.

Caleta-Car, who has been dubbed as a “Daddy Emperor” by The Mirror (which is what his name translates to), has asserted himself as one of Marseille’s most accurate passers of the ball per 90, achieving an average of 72 passes, whilst also demonstrating his ability as a long-ball specialist, topping the charts for accurate long balls per 90 with an average of six accurate long balls per game.

Though, his defensive metrics are not as impressive as his offensive stats this season, with the only shining light in this area being his 66.7% of dribblers tackled metric that places him within the elite category for positionally similar players across the last 365 days in Europe’s top 5 leagues, as per FB Ref.

Wolves will feel hard done if Aston Villa capture their target after their bid fell short just seven months ago.

It has been reported that Lage is in the market for a young striker and a right-footed centre-back this summer, with Caleta-Car fitting the bill for the latter requirement.

Indeed, based on the stats above, he could become the club’s own Ruben Dias too, a player the Old Gold famously missed out on before he joined City. FB Ref notes how the players are incredibly similar and a deeper look at the stats explains why.

They both complete over 92% of their passes, and make a fairly equal number of progressive passes with Caleta-Car averaging 426.1 yards per 90 compared to the Manchester City defender’s 432.1.

Furthermore, they are producing a similar number of defensive actions. Dias completes 2.58 tackles and interceptions per 90 whereas the Marseille brute averages 2.45.

Thus, the Old Gold faithful will hope Lage can tempt the Croatian to the Molineux in what would be a great signing.
