Liverpool links to French superstar with €1bn release clause are "real", it's not Mbappe

There is now a “real prospect” of Liverpool completing the signing of an “extraordinary” France international as they seek to break out of their recent rut.

Van Dijk's leadership breaks Liverpool slump

The Premier League champions are back in action away to Brentford on Saturday evening, looking to build on Wednesday’s 5-1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk revealed after the win in Germany that he held a meeting with just the players at the start of the week, following a dreadful run of form.

“On Monday everyone was sad because we lost to Man United at home,” said Van Dijk. “It was tough under the circumstances so on Monday we came together but it wasn’t a crisis meeting. Nobody wants to lose four games in a row but it was the situation we faced.

“Obviously we also had a proper debrief with the manager but we also had a separate one as players. I wanted to say some things. It’s not something I do after every game. After my meeting everyone was happy!”

Away from Liverpool’s on-pitch duties, an exciting new transfer rumour has emerged, with FSG seemingly planning to spend their way out of their recent run.

Liverpool in race to sign Champions League winner

Speaking to TEAMtalk, journalist Dean Jones claimed that Liverpool have a “real” chance of signing Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, but face competition for his signature.

Camavinga has a €1bn release clause in his Real Madrid contract, but stands out as a wonderful option for Liverpool, should he and Xabi Alonso fail to fully click at Madrid, resulting in Los Blancos cashing in for a more reasonable figure.

The 22-year-old Frenchman has won two Champions League crowns in his career, as well as a couple of La Liga titles, while Carlo Ancelotti has called him an “extraordinary” player, which is high praise from a legendary manager.

Liverpool have signed a Salah-type player who's got the "pace of Torres"

Camavinga would bring class, elegance and substance to Liverpool’s midfield, not to mention being able to shine at left-back, and given his age, he could mature into a genuinely world-class midfield at Anfield. Arne Slot does have great depth there, but if the chance arises to sign him, it would be foolish to say no.

Yankees' Cam Schlittler Makes History With Unforgettable Outing to Eliminate Red Sox

Rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler put the Yankees on his back on Thursday night, pitching eight shutout innings against the rival—and his hometown—Red Sox to help New York advance to the American League Division Series for a second consecutive season.

Over eight frames, the 24-year-old allowed just five hits, no walks, and struck out 12 Boston batters on 107 pitches—and also made some pretty impressive MLB history in the process.

As relayed by ESPN's Jeff Passan on X (formerly Twitter), Schlittler is the first pitcher in baseball history to go eight innings with no walks and 12 strikeouts in a postseason game.

Factor in that it was the rookie's first-ever postseason appearance, against the team he grew up rooting for—Schlittler is a Walpole, Mass. native—and it made the night that much more special.

How a Cornhole Match Messed Up MLB’s All-Star Selection Show

MLB fans hoping to learn which players were selected to the 2025 All-Star Game were met with a suprise Sunday afternoon.

ESPN's MLB All-Star selection show aired almost10 minutes later than expected thanks to a cornhole tournament on the network's airwaves.

The Camping World Pro Tour's Pro Doubles Final featured a spirited matchup in which Tony Smith and Mark Richards topped Cheyenne Bubenheim and Jordan Power. It was scintillating action all the way until the end. And in all likelihood it supremely annoyed a whole lot of people.

Below is what viewers tuning in for the selection show saw:

Look, I'm not trying to tell them their business or anything, but maybe that wasn't ESPN's best programming decision.

In the end, the rosters were unveiled and all was well, but not before a doubles cornhole tournament got its moment in the sun.

Fans Are Stunned by How Big MLB Pitching Rubber Is After Dodgers Dug It Out

Longtime Los Angeles Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw became the 20th pitcher in MLB history to tally 3,000 career strikeouts on Wednesday night when he fanned Vinny Capra in his team's eventual 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The 37-year-old received a standing ovation following the inning-ending K. Then, after the game, the Dodgers' grounds crew took the time to dig out the pitching rubber on which he accomplished the feat and awarded it to the ten-time All-Star. Take a look:

As it turns out, the pitching rubbers in the MLB are absolutely —and far bigger than fans were aware of, because most of it stays out of view beneath the dirt. Here's a look at some of the best reactions to the revelation across X (formerly Twitter):

USMNT to face Senegal in Charlotte on May 31 as Mauricio Pochettino finalizes World Cup tune-ups

The USMNT will play Senegal on May 31 in its second-to-last World Cup warmup friendly, U.S. soccer announced Thursday morning. The 19th-ranked African side will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina to face off Mauricio Pochettino's side, a week before the U.S. host Germany in Chicago. The two teams have never played in an international competition.

Facing off against the African giants

Senegal round out a tough pre-tournament slate for the USMNT ahead of the World Cup. The two sides have never played each other in international competition, but the 19th-ranked CAF powerhouse have been consistently the top team in their federation of late. They won the 2021 AFCON and are littered with top level talent – especially in attacking positions.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed the addition of another elite opponent as the U.S. continue to diversify their pre-tournament schedule.

“We are so happy to have such a great team in Senegal as our fourth opponent in the matches leading up into the tournament,” Pochettino said. “In the year leading up to the World Cup, we will have played at least one team from five different confederations, which is incredibly valuable for our preparations. We are looking forward to an amazing crowd in Charlotte.”

Senegal arrive as one of Africa’s most consistent forces. Led by 2019 African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mané, the Teranga Lions went unbeaten in CAF World Cup qualifying (seven wins, three goals conceded) and won the 2021 AFCON. They will appear at their third straight World Cup in 2026 and were drawn into Group I with France, Norway and the FIFA Playoff 2 winner.

USMNT in good form on return to Charlotte

The USMNT come into the friendlies in good form. After a tough Gold Cup final loss, Pochettino's men have improved with every friendly. They are undefeated in their last five, and come off a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Uruguay in November. The friendly against Senegal will help them prepare for the variety of styles they could face at the 2026 World Cup – which they will host – U.S. Soccer said.

This will be the USMNT’s second-ever match at Bank of America Stadium. The team last played in Charlotte during the 2023 Gold Cup, when a Jesús Ferreira hat trick propelled the U.S. to a 6–0 win over Trinidad and Tobago in front of more than 40,000 fans.

Charlotte FC defender Tim Ream, who has earned 79 caps and captained the U.S. 25 times, is one of the city’s strongest links to the national team.

  • Rounds off a challenging slate

The Senegal fixture will complete a challenging slate leading up to the World Cup for the U.S. Pochettino's side will face off against Belgium, Portugal and Germany. All four teams are in the top 20 of FIFA's rankings. Portugal, Germany and Belgium are in the top 10.

    Ready for the World Cup

The announcement comes a week after the USMNT learned their fate at the World Cup next summer. They will face off against Paraguay and Australia, as well as the winner of a European playoff to round off what would seem to be a kind group. If Turkey qualify, the USMNT will have played all three of their group opponents within the last year.

Caicedo 2.0: Chelsea have made contact to sign “world-class” top target

Enzo Maresca is currently enduring a tricky period as Chelsea boss, with his side suffering somewhat of a decline in form over the last couple of weeks across all competitions.

The Blues are currently enduring a run of four games without a win, with three of which coming in the Premier League – resulting in a drop in the current standings.

After the last three matches, the Italian’s side have now dropped from second in England’s top-flight, down to fifth and now sit eight points off leaders Arsenal.

However, Maresca will have the chance to strengthen his squad in the upcoming January transfer window, potentially kickstarting any chance of securing the title.

Even though the window is a few weeks away, the hierarchy have already wasted no time in targeting numerous players to try and strengthen the squad in key areas.

Chelsea’s transfer targets ahead of the January window

Over the last couple of weeks, Chelsea have been just one of the Premier League clubs touted with a potential winter move to land RB Leipzig Castello Lukeba.

It’s been reported that the Frenchman could be available for a fee in the region of £52m this winter, but the Bundesliga side are currently unwilling to offload the youngster.

The 22-year-old is a left-footed centre-back, something which is a huge selling point to the hierarchy amid the absence of Levi Colwill this season.

However, he’s not the only target currently on their radar, with Barcelona central midfielder Marc Casado another option being considered by the Blues board.

According to one Spanish outlet, Maresca’s men have already made contact with the LaLiga outfit over a potential move this winter, but it’s unclear if they would sanction a move.

It also states that the Spaniard is seen as one of the club’s targets for the upcoming window, with the youngster seen as an excellent option to bolster the options in midfield.

Why Chelsea’s latest target would be Caicedo 2.0

Spending big money on a midfielder isn’t alien to Chelsea, with the club previously spending a then English-record transfer fee on the signature of Moises Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian international cost a reported £115m from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023, with the 24-year-old making himself a fan-favourite in the process.

He’s already racked up 117 appearances for the Blues to date, starring at both ends of the pitch – as seen by his tally of seven goals including a screamer against Liverpool this season.

However, his disciplinary record has held him back at times, as seen against Arsenal last month, when he received a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino.

There’s no denying that Caicedo remains as one of Maresca’s most important players, but the club could be about to land their next version of the midfielder this January with a move for Casado.

Marc Casado celebrates scoring for Barcelona.

The 22-year-old has made 11 appearances in LaLiga so far this campaign, subsequently producing numerous incredible figures and leading one analyst labelling him “world-class”.

When comparing his stats to those of Caicedo in the last few months, the Barca star has managed to outperform him in multiple key areas – subsequently showcasing his incredible talents.

Casado has dominated the Blues star in possession so far this campaign, as seen by his better pass completion far and more passes completed into the final third per 90.

Such numbers could make him yet another ball-playing option for the manager, which could help them get out of the current slump they find themselves in.

His talent with the ball at his feet is further reflected in his tally of more take-ons completed, whilst also completing more progressive carries per 90, which could help the Blues create more chances.

However, with the ball, Casado has been just as impressive, subsequently achieving more blocks and clearances per 90 than the £115m man in 2025/26.

Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham in action with FC Barcelona'sMarcCasado

It’s currently unclear if the Barca star would want to make the move to England, but it’s evident he would offer Chelsea a top-level player in their hunt for added success.

The prospect of the Spaniard operating alongside Caicedo is one for the fans to get excited about, with such a partnership potentially operating together for many years to come.

David Miller in the 500 club: key numbers from a few, long T20 careers

He is the first South African to play 500 T20s – how do his numbers match up to the others who’ve got to the landmark, and who’s likely to get there next?

Sampath Bandarupalli26-Sep-2024David Miller featured in his 500th T20 match on Wednesday night in Guyana, playing for Barbados Royals against hosts Guyana Amazon Warriors. Miller marked the occasion with an unbeaten 34-ball 71. Who else is in the exclusive 500 club and how does Miller’s numbers match up? Here’s a run through.

The first South African in the club

Miller is one among six players with 500-plus T20 appearances and the first from South Africa to get to the landmark. This elite club is dominated by West Indians – Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell – while Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik is the other member.Related

  • Pollard: We need to produce next batches of Bravos, Pollards, Narines

  • David Miller: 'As you get older, you understand your game a lot better'

Miller is also the first specialist batter to feature in 500 T20 matches, with all the others playing (for big chunks of their careers at least, if not all through) as allrounders.

16 years for Miller’s 500

Miller needed 16 years and 172 days to complete 500 T20 appearances, having debuted in 2008. He took the second-longest time to 500 T20s after Malik, who needed 17 years and 283 days. Malik is also the oldest to the landmark – he was 41 years and two days old in 2023 when he played his 500th T20.

Miller, on Wednesday, was 35 years and 107 days old and is the second youngest to reach 500 T20s, after Pollard (32y 297d). Narine is the quickest to play 500 T20s in terms of time from debut, having got there in 13 years and 70 days.

Pollard’s 10k in 500

Pollard, the first player to 500 T20s, marked the milestone by reaching 10,000 career runs. Two others scored 10000-plus runs in their first 500 T20s – Malik (12,287) and Miller (10,678). Bravo and Narine lead the bowling list with 540 and 537 wickets respectively. Russell wasn’t too far from both marks in his 500th – 8490 runs and 453 wickets.

The globe-trotters from the West Indies

The proportion of T20Is in any player’s T20 career is usually on the lower side, and this is very apparent among the West Indies players. In all 125 of Miller’s 500 T20s have international status, while Malik had played 124 T20Is at the time of his 500th T20.The highest number of T20Is among the four West Indians in their first 500 T20s was 86 by Bravo. Russell and Pollard featured in 78 and 72 respectively, while Narine was part of only 51 – all the rest of their T20s being in franchise leagues around the world.

Who is likely to join the club next?

The next player to 500 T20 appearance should be an Englishman – Ravi Bopara or Alex Hales. Bopara made his debut in this format back in 2003 and is still an active player, but Hales can pip him because of his franchise contracts. Chris Gayle, the leading run-getter in T20s, has played 463 matches but none since 2022 (nor has he officially retired from T20 cricket).Rohit Sharma, India’s most capped T20 player with 448 matches, is no longer a T20I cricketer and could be limited to playing this format in the IPL. Rashid Khan, also on 448, is another frontrunner to join the list in the not-too-distant future.New Zealand’s Suzie Bates is ahead of Rohit and Rashid with 449 matches. She could be the first woman to feature in 500 T20s. Another New Zealander, Sophie Devine, is the only other woman to play 400-plus T20s to date.

D-Backs Rally Around Tearful Ketel Marte After Fan's Classless Taunt

Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte was subjected to some verbal taunting by a Chicago White Sox fan that went way over the line on Tuesday night. The standout infielder could be seen in tears as manager Torey Lovullo came out to make a pitching change. The two shared a very human moment as Lovullo consoled his player, who had been the recipient of some vile chirping regarding his mother, who died in a 2017 car accident.

The Diamondbacks manager said the hurtful language was directed at Marte during an at-bat in the top of the seventh inning. Arizona's coaching staff and stadium personnel were able to identify the man and he was ejected, per the team.

“I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers,” Lovullo said postgame. “I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.”

Lovullo's message for Marte was powerful and simple:

"I love you and I’m with you and we’re all together and you’re not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn’t have an impact on you."

Marte's teammate Geraldo Perdomo was understandably upset about the situation and said the fan should be banned.

"That can't happen," the shortstop added. "We can't continue to do that s— here in MLB."

Aston Villa and Scotland star John McGinn sends hilarious tweet roasting World Cup draw delays

Scotland discovered their World Cup 2026 group opposition after the draw took place in Washington DC, but only after an infernally long pre-draw build-up that left many of those watching fuming. One of those frustrated by the long videos, interviews with stars, including US President Donald Trump, was Scotland star John McGinn, who summed-up everyone's frustrations in one simple, but hilarious image.

  • Draw eventually made ahead of World Cup

The waiting is finally over, but it came only after Rio Ferdinand, Heidi Klum, Shaquille O’Neal and a host of other presenters took what felt like several lifetimes to complete the draw for next year’s tournament in America, Canada and Mexico. Steve Clarke’s side has been drawn in a very tricky group where they will face South American giants Brazil, 2022 semi-finalists Morocco, and Haiti.

Qualification for the World Cup marks the Tartan Army's first appearance at the tournament since 1998, a campaign where they also faced Brazil and Morocco in the group stage. The draw presents a challenging but exciting prospect after they topped their qualifying group ahead of Denmark following that thrilling 4-2 win at Hampden Park. Scotland can progress past the group stage for the first time in their history.

But in the couple of hours it took for the draw to start, McGinn posted an image which described how the vast majority of the viewing public felt.

McGinn sums up mood in one image

The image earned McGinn lots of replies, many agreeing with him that the draw was dragging on wary too, long. One of his followers said: "Rumour has it. The second half of the draw is on display at Villa Park at half time tomorrow." Another added: "This makes the 27 years without qualifying feel short."

  • Christie: 'You can't ask for more exciting games'

Following the draw, Scotland midfielder Ryan Christie told the BBC: "It's exciting. A tough group but one we're looking forward to. We have to go over there wanting to try and prove a point. We're not just there to make up the numbers. We're wanting to go and compete and get through the group phase. Two out of the three games are going to be massively tough and even Haiti, nobody gets to a World Cup without being a decent team. (They are) teams we're not used to playing. You can't ask for more exciting games."

He added: "I'm sure me and the rest of the boys are buzzing for it. Everybody's been asking me who I've wanted, I've been saying Brazil the whole week and then they came out and I thought, maybe I shouldn't be saying that. Brazil was one of my favourite international teams growing up. Hopefully, we'll get the chance, myself, to play them next summer."

    Wait to discover kick-off time

This edition of the World Cup will feature a new, expanded format with 48 teams and nations have been divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to a new Round of 32 knockout stage. This increases the total matches from 64 to a whopping 104, and the champions this time round will play eight matches instead of seven. The draw is now complete, but the specific match dates, venues, and kick-off times are being announced by FIFA in a special program tomorrow. The opening match will be on June 11th in Mexico City, and the final will be on July 19th in New Jersey.

Cunha upgrade: Man Utd looking to sign “one of the best wingers in Europe”

Manchester United aren’t alien to spending a pretty penny in the transfer market, as seen by their recent attempts over the last couple of years under various managers.

The hierarchy have splashed over £800m on new additions since the summer of 2022, with Ruben Amorim the most recent beneficiary of the huge spending.

He’s already been handed over £200m worth of funds since taking the reins in November last year, but was only able to guide the club to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League.

His summer additions have already made an immediate impact, as seen by the sixth-place standing at present, but certain areas are still in need of added depth.

With January now rapidly approaching on the horizon, it could provide INEOS and the manager with yet another opportunity to finally nail their recruitment in the market.

United’s hunt for added attacking reinforcements this January

Over the last couple of weeks, United have been named as just one side who are contemplating a winter move to land Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo to improve options in the final third.

It’s been reported that the Ghanaian international is available for a fee in the region of £65m due to his release clause becoming active on the 1st of the new year.

However, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are all said to be interested in a move for the 25-year-old, which could lead to huge competition for his signature.

Semenyo isn’t the only attacker currently in their sights at present, with PSG star Bradley Barcola another option the hierarchy have identified ahead of January.

According to one Spanish outlet, the Red Devils are considering a move for the French forward, after his impressive start to 2025/26, which has seen him net five goals in Ligue 1 to date.

However, the report also states Luis Enrique doesn’t want to lose one of his star players next month, leading to a €70m (£60m) asking price being placed on his head.

Why Barcola would be an upgrade on Cunha

As part of the club’s £200m spending spree during the summer window, United managed to clinch the signature of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from
Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils paid a reported £62.5m including add-ons for his services, a deal which was seen as excellent business, after he netted 15 league goals last season.

However, a few months into his career at Old Trafford, Cunha has struggled to meet expectations and has been unable to produce his best performances in the Premier League.

In his 12 league matches to date, he’s only scored once and registered a single assist – the lowest tally of any of the three forwards who moved to the Theatre of Dreams in the summer.

Whilst he still has plenty of time to turn things around, the board will no doubt be concerned about his lack of impact during the early stages of his career in Manchester.

He could find minutes harder to come by after January if the hierarchy manage to complete a move for Barcola, with the French youngster one of Europe’s biggest stars.

When comparing his stats to Cunha in 2025/26 to date, the PSG sensation has dominated in key areas, which could provide Amorim with a huge upgrade in the attacking department.

Barcola, who’s been described as “one of the best wingers in Europe” by European football expert Zach Lowy, has massively outscored the United star whilst posting a better shot on target accuracy rate in attacking areas.

Such numbers showcase the dominance he possesses over Cunha when in front of goal, which could hand Amorim the added firepower he is currently craving.

However, the Frenchman has also provided a more creative option than the Brazilian this season, as seen by his better tallies in progressive passes and key passes per 90.

Getting past the opposition has also been a strength of Barcola, as demonstrated by his higher tally of take-ons per 90 and dribbled into the opposition box.

At just 23, it’s evident that Barcola is already a bigger talent than Cunha, but he also has age on his side, which could allow him to reach the next level in the years ahead.

£60m would be yet another huge investment from the board, but it is one that could allow the Red Devils to be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League for many years to come.
