Wolves fans hail Fabio Silva’s performance

A number of Wolves supporters have lauded Fabio Silva’s influential performance for Portugal Under-21s in their emphatic 11-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Another international break is now in full flow, halting the Premier League season in frustrating fashion for most fans.

It came at the wrong time for Wolves, in particular, with Bruno Lage’s side picking up some form, having won consecutive games against Southampton and Newcastle United.

One player who has been in impressive form for his country this week is Silva, who started for Portugal U21s on Thursday evening.

The 19-year-old scored and assisted twice apiece in the 11-0 rout of Liechtenstein, perhaps picking up some confidence, having failed to make a league start for Wolves this season.

Pundit hints at Bielsa leaving Leeds

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has hinted that Marcelo Bielsa could leave Leeds United, given the manner in which he signs new deals.

The Lowdown: Bielsa transforms Leeds

Bielsa has been one of the most influential figures at Elland Road in many years, guiding the Whites back into the Premier League after nearly 20 years in the wilderness.

Not only has the Argentine got Leeds playing fantastic football, but he is a down-to-earth character who has connected with the supporters.

The Latest: Pundit gives worrying update

Bielsa only signs one-year extensions at a time, however, and McLeish told Football Insider that it means he can move on easily if he decides he has taken a team far enough:

“It’s an unusual stance for a manager to take. Normally you look for a bit of stability. If you are building something you can argue that things take time.

“Bielsa seems to be unique in that field and he’s happy to continue the arrangement. Who’s to say he’s wrong? He judges himself and if he feels he’s not doing well enough he will walk.

“Rather than getting a three-year contract and getting sacked for two year’s money. He’s got his ways and who can criticise him? He’s been superb and taken Leeds to Mecca really.”

The Verdict: Final season at Elland Road?

The thought of Leeds losing Bielsa doesn’t bear thinking about, but there is some concern that he might be slowly coming to the end of the road with the Whites.

His side have made a poor start to the season and it may be the 66-year-old, who has been hailed as ‘special’ by Mauricio Pochettino, feels a fresh challenge is required next summer.

That may be knee-jerk thinking, though, and the hope is surely that another new one-year deal is signed when the 2021/22 campaign reaches its conclusion.

West Brom confirm Jayson Molumby signing

West Bromwich Albion have secured a deal to bring Jayson Molumby to The Hawthorns.

What’s the latest?

According to a statement posted on the West Brom website, Albion have signed the Brighton & Hove Albion central midfielder on a season-long loan deal, with a view to a permanent transfer next summer.

The statement went on to mention the fact that the Republic of Ireland international is the Baggies’ sixth signing of the summer, as well as relaying Valerien Ismael’s comments regarding the 22-year-old’s arrival.

The Frenchman said: “Jayson is the perfect example of a player who has the right mentality and suits our philosophy. He is the right player for us and we are delighted to have him.

“His skills out of possession are incredible and he gives us more volume and more possibilities in midfield, which will support us with our intensity and this is one of his strengths.

“Jayson is young but he already has a lot of experience in the Championship and with Ireland. He has the perfect profile – our new profile – to be a West Brom player and I’m delighted to have him.”

Fans will be buzzing

Following the departures of Rekeem Harper, Sam Field and Romaine Sawyers, Ismael’s side was lacking a considerable amount of depth in central midfield, with the position very much appearing to be a priority for Frenchman over what remained of the summer transfer window.

As such, the fact that the 45-year-old has now secured the addition of a player such as Molumby, who boasts experience at both Championship and international level, as well as the positional versatility which Ismael will value, is sure to have left The Hawthorns faithful buzzing.

Indeed, the £900k-rated man has previously spent loan spells with two Championship sides, the first of which came with Millwall in the club’s 2019/20 campaign.

Over his 36 league appearances for the Lions that season, the central midfielder scored one goal, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, in addition to making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 0.4 key passes per game – demonstrating his all-round ability in the middle of the park.

The second of the £7.1k-per-week midfielder’s Championship loans was spent with Preston North End in the second half of last season, where he registered one assist over 15 appearances, in addition to making an average of 0.3 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and 0.3 key passes per match.

As such, Molumby would not only appear to be a signing who has plugged a gap in the Albion squad, but he is also a player who boasts a considerable amount of ability, and one who could well prove to make all the difference in Ismael’s push for promotion in what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship campaign.

West Brom fans will be delighted with the news of Molumby’s signing this summer.

Everton injury news on Abdoulaye Doucoure

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing as some early team news emerged ahead of their trip to Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Rafael Benitez has now revealed (via Phil Kirkbride) that the midfielder has been training today and is ‘maybe’ available against the Bees.

Doucoure emerged as one of the Toffees’ key players before he got injured this season, scoring two goals and supplying a further four assists in the top flight, and it is telling that they have not managed to win any of their last four league matches without him in the squad (Transfermarkt).

Therefore, to even have a slight chance of him returning to the line-up would be a welcome boost as Everton look to end their recent rotten run of form.

Manchester City: Fans react to Liam Delap update

Stoke City are increasingly confident of winning the race to sign Manchester City Under-23’s striker Liam Delap on loan, as reported by Football League World.

Enjoying a fantastic season for Manchester City and the Manchester City Under-23’s side, the 18-year-old registered 36 goal contributions in 27 fixtures; 30 goals and six assists [Transfermarkt].

Of course, the youngster scored in his senior debut for the Citizens in a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup third round last September [BBC].

Now, those behind the scenes at the Britannia Stadium believe that Stoke City are in pole position to land Delap on a loan deal [Football League World].

In light of this news, loads of Manchester City diehards took to Twitter to discuss the latest developments.

Everton transfer update on Jones

Lots of Everton fans have been left fuming over a transfer update on Phil Jones.

As per 90min, the Goodison Park faithful are one of a number of clubs in the Premier League ‘keeping tabs’ on his situation at Manchester United, along with Newcastle United, West Ham United, Southampton, Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Burnley.

The Old Trafford faithful are reportedly willing to let the central defender leave on a free transfer, and the Merseyside club could well take advantage of that.

However, Rafa Benitez’s team are already stocked up in the centre-back department with Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina, and so a move for Jones would not make much sense considering his lack of action over the past couple of seasons.

The 29-year-old Englishman is very injury prone, and so it is not a surprise to see so many Toffees against the potential deal.

Liverpool fans bemoan Berardi rumours

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy about the Reds’ reported interest in signing Italy winger Domenico Berardi this summer.

Last season proved to be a difficult one at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp’s side ended up saving their campaign with a third-place finish in the Premier League. A number of Reds players failed to hit their usual heights, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino arguably the most culpable in that respect.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

It could be that Klopp believes another wide player needs to come in this summer in order to improve competition for places in 2021/22.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool are interested in Berardi, and Sassuolo would be willing to sell him for €40m (£34.3m).

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in 14 appearances for Italy and he has played three times at Euro 2020 this summer. However, the one-club man has never played in the group stage of any European club competition, which suggests that a move to Anfield would be quite a step up for him.

Newcastle United set to sign Santiago Munoz

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has claimed that Newcastle United are set to sign Santiago Munoz on transfer deadline day.

What’s the story?

Reports on Tuesday morning claimed that the Magpies could seal the loan signing of Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury – although it now appears that the deal may be off – with Edwards instead revealing more positive news on Munoz.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Young Mexican forward Santiago Munoz is also set to sign, although the 19-year-old will initially go into the Academy squad. Very much a Steve Nickson signing and will be allowed to settle before being considered for first team.”

Exciting news for Newcastle fans

While Munoz is unlikely to come in and make an immediate impact on the first team as Edwards himself has said, the arrival of the talented Mexican is certainly an exciting one for Newcastle fans.

The 19-year-old is a centre-forward by trade and has shown flashes of the kind of impressive potential which would have seen the club’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson take note and drive this signing.

As per Sofascore, Munoz has averaged more than one shot per game in the Liga MX Clausura this year, while also completing more than 50% of his attempted dribbles – to put that into context, Allan Saint-Maximin boasts a 71% completion rate on his dribbles.

Munoz is direct, and generally clinical in front of goal, with Sofascore registering him as missing only one big chance in the 18 games he has played in the league this year.

If the Mexican can integrate and adapt well to his new surroundings when he officially puts pen to paper on a deal at St James’ Park, then there’s every chance he could well force his way into Bruce’s thinking in the first team sooner rather than later.

The Magpies aren’t exactly blessed with striking cover outside of Callum Wilson, so Munoz may fancy his chances of springing a surprise and rising through the ranks fast.

Edwards’ update is very exciting for Newcastle fans.

Meanwhile, Lee Ryder has dropped an intriguing Newcastle United transfer claim…

Leeds facing transfer battle for Rodrigo de Paul

Leeds United could be facing a transfer nightmare as an update emerges on Udinese midfielder Rodrigo de Paul.

What’s the story?

Reports last summer suggested that Leeds were very much interested in bringing the Argentina international to Elland Road, while The Athletic’s Phil Hay recently delivered an update by claiming that De Paul actually wants to come to the Premier League to join Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Now however, journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that La Liga champions Atletico Madrid have opened talks with Udinese over signing De Paul this summer, and that while many clubs are in the race, the Spanish side have so offered money and central defender Nehuen Perez to sweeten a potential deal.

Bielsa will be fuming

Given how long Leeds’ reported pursuit of De Paul has been, to miss out on the Argentine after a year of wanting him would be a hammer blow to Bielsa and would surely have the Whites boss livid.

De Paul seems to be the perfect fit for what Bielsa wants at Elland Road, with his ability to score goals and also be a defensive menace, making him a superb box-to-box option – he bagged an impressive nine goals and provided a further 11 assists in all competitions last season.

That completeness is something Udinese’s technical director, Pier Paolo Marino, has praised the £26m-rated star for, saying: “Rodrigo is animated by a profound love of football. It’s one of the attributes all top players must have. He’s a tireless worker who mixes quantity with quality, training as hard as he plays. In a nutshell, he’s the ideal player.”

Meanwhile, Udinese coach Luca Gotti, added: “Rodrigo is not the only one we have here who has a bright future but he can play for all the top clubs. Any team in the world. I mean, he starts for Lionel Messi’s Argentina. I’ve been able to watch this metamorphosis from up close, the shift in mentality that turns a good player into a top player, a champion.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

“He’s become a leader and is the first person to demand more of himself. Rodrigo is able to pass that work ethic on to his team-mates.”

If Victor Orta lets De Paul slip through his grasp and watch him join Atletico instead, it would surely be a major howler on the part of the Leeds director of football, and something that would have Bielsa fuming.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are eyeing this player who just got relegated…

Celtic: Hoops set to miss out on Fergal Harkin appointment

Manchester City Football Partnerships and Pathways manager Fergal Harkin no longer looks to be in the frame for the sporting director role at Celtic, according to the Daily Record.

The Lowdown

An openly kept secret to many, the Celts have made plans for a major restructuring mission at the club after a disastrous 2020/21 campaign. Needing to rebuild the brains behind the operation alongside the playing staff, Harkin was seen as many as the preferential candidate for the role. This is owing to his contacts within the game and high-level experience in Manchester.

Recruitment has especially been a major stumbling block for Celtic in the past twelve months, which needs urgent replenishment. Conscious towards a whole market of talented young players in the Premier League 2 and beyond, the Irishman was reportedly earmarked to play a major role in the Hoops summer renovation [The Scottish Sun].

The Latest

Concerningly, this prospective move has now fallen by the wayside [The Scottish Sun]. Not only that, the Irish Independent state that the former Finn Harps player was never actually offered the position, which is quite the twist seeing as previous reports [Football Insider] went so far as to claim a deal for the ‘massive’ Hoops fan was ’90 per cent’ done.

Celtic are now believed to be tracking other options, with Belgium assistant Shaun Maloney believed to be the firm favourite for the job [Daily Record].

Verdict: Harkin collapse is a disappointing blow for Celtic

News of the proposed deal collapsing is a bitter blow for the Celtic support. Still without a new manager since Neil Lennon’s February resignation, the Hoops face a rather uncertain beginning to the 2021/22 campaign [Irish Times].

Labelled as a “fantastic” potential appointment by pundit Noel Whelan, you can’t help but feel the Hoops could’ve done with Harkin’s big club influence at Celtic Park [Football Insider].

Champions League qualifying is set to commence in a matter of weeks for the Celts [The Scotsman]. Time is indeed of the essence at Parkhead, and the Glasgow giants will need to provide the Celtic Park faithful with some clarity sooner rather than later.
