Com a derrota para o ABC em 2023, o clube carioca vê a Copa do Brasil como uma prioridade esse ano. Mesmo com o elenco completamente diferente, a partida contra a equipe catarinense pode representar uma redenção da má atuação do ano passado.

O único desfalque, entre os titulares, para o confronto contra o Volta Redonda, seria Paulo Henrique, suspenso pelo terceiro amarelo. Além disso, o volante argentino Sforza já está regularizado no BID e pode estrear com a camisa Cruz-Maltina já no domingo. Cristiano Ronaldo was filmed launching into a sarcastic tirade against the referee during Al-Nassr’s 3–1 victory over Neom in the Saudi Pro League on Saturday. The Portuguese forward always played with his heart on his sleeve and couldn't hide his frustrations despite scoring as his team continued their perfect start to the new league campaign in 2025-26.

• Ronaldo’s anger caught on camera

  The incident happened after the referee blew for half-time with the score still locked at 0-0. Ronaldo was visibly frustrated that the referee had halted a promising Al-Nassr attack. While walking towards the tunnel, he approached the official and delivered a pointed message that was dripping with irony, as reported by .

  Ronaldo was heard saying: “Well done, well done. Keep going like that, you’re doing a good game – very good game you do.”

  Ronaldo is chasing the once-seemingly impossible dream of 1,000 career goals, and he delivered when it mattered most. A penalty was won after Joao Felix was shoved in the back while chasing the rebound from Ronaldo’s own blocked effort. This gave the captain the perfect chance to settle the contest. Ronaldo stepped up to do the honours from 12 yards and, facing his compatriot Luis Maximiano in goal, he made no mistake from 12 yards to convert his attempt. He fired low and precise into the corner to bring up his 953rd career goal, which was also his 83rd strike in the Saudi Pro League since joining Al-Nassr in early 2023.

  Dominant Al-Nassr extend perfect start

  Ronaldo’s penalty doubled Al-Nassr’s lead after Angelo Gabriel opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half. Neom were already struggling to keep pace, and imploded further when Luciano Rodríguez was sent off for a reckless elbow midway through the second half. The red card effectively ended their resistance, and Al-Nassr cruised home with their eighth straight league victory. Since arriving in Riyadh, Ronaldo has scored 35 goals in his first full season, followed by 25 last year, and is now on course to surpass both tallies in his third campaign. Only Felix has outscored him this season as the 25-year-old added a late goal against Neom, which was his 10th of the campaign. 

• Ronaldo shared a defiant post-match message

  After the final whistle, any hint of irritation was gone. On social media, he posted a typically cryptic message, which read: "Working on our dream." The Saudi giants are hunting their first domestic crown under Ronaldo’s captaincy, and at this rate, few would bet against them.

  Even at 40, Ronaldo’s appetite for goals is undiminished. In 2025 alone, he has averaged better than a goal per game, bringing him within touching distance of the mythical 1,000-goal milestone. Behind him on the Saudi scoring charts is Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose 47 league goals since 2023 look modest compared to Ronaldo’s astonishing 83.

  International duty beckoning Ronaldo

  Away from domestic duties, Ronaldo’s focus now shifts to international football. He will link up with Portugal this week for their World Cup qualifying campaign, with upcoming fixtures against Ireland in Dublin and Armenia in Lisbon. Ahead of those games, he revisited a question that has followed him for years, whether he needs a World Cup to complete his legacy?

  "If you ask me, ‘Cristiano, is it a dream to win the World Cup?’ No, it’s not a dream," Ronaldo said to . "To win the World Cup, nothing will change my name in the history of football, I’m not going to lie. One thing that I’m sure of [is] that I will enjoy the moment. The moment is the most important thing that we have. We are not qualified already. Enjoy the moment.

  "In my mind, I’m not thinking in that way. Of course, you want to win, yeah. When you compete, you want to win… for me, [winning the World Cup] is not going to change the way I see things. We won three titles for Portugal. Before, Portugal had never won [anything]. Portugal have never won a World Cup. ‘Yeah, but they can win.’ Yes, we’re going to fight for that. But [using it to] define [me] at 40 years old, 41? To define what? To define if I’m one of the best in history? To win one competition, six games, seven games? You think it’s fair? It’s not fair."

  After he returns from international duty, Ronaldo will face sixth-placed Al-Khaleej on November 23, followed by an AFC Cup tie against Istiklol.

After yet another dismal result on Saturday, the pressure has only intensified further on Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin.

At the weekend, the Gers suffered their first Premiership defeat of the season, beaten 2-0 by Heart of Midlothian; the Jambos’ securing a first victory at Ibrox since 2014.

However, having drawn their previous four league matches, this is the Light Blues’ worst start to a season since 1978, sat tenth in the table, not forgetting the fact that they were embarrassingly hammered 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs too.

Speaking on Sky Sports News shortly after full-time, Rangers legend Kris Boyd labelled it “terrible” and “embarrassing”, noting that Hearts supporters started signing “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, only for Rangers supporters to join in.

The Gers’ next fixture is Saturday evening’s League Cup quarter-final against in-form Hibernian so, for Martin to save his job, he simply must reintegrate the club’s “best player” ahead of that huge tie.

That, however, might involved dropping Thelo Aasgaard.

What Thelo Aasgaard should bring to Rangers

Few enjoyed a more productive international break than Aasgaard who, after coming off the bench in the 64th minute on Tuesday, scored four times as Norway crushed Moldova 11-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo.

This means the Merseyside-born Norwegian has now netted five goals in just three international caps, opening his account on debut in the reverse fixture in Chișinău earlier this year.

Over the summer, the 23-year-old joined Rangers for £3.5m from Luton Town, following their relegation to EFL League One, just six months after moving to the Hatters from Wigan for around £3m.

At the time of his arrival in Glasgow, Kai Watson was certainly excited, noting that his “stock has massively risen” in recent months, labelling him a “technical dribbler”, believing he can play as an attacking midfielder or out-wide.

Well, Rangers supporters are yet to see very much of that so far, yet to register either a goal or an assist in six appearances for the club.

Against Hearts on Saturday, Aasgaard touched the ball 67 times, only defenders James Tavernier (106) and John Souttar (103) accumulated more, but he did very little with it, completing just 77% of his passes, losing possession on 16 occasions, the second most of any Rangers player.

After the match, he was confronted by angry supporters in the car park, repeatedly saying “I understand, I understand”, but should Aasgaard be the man taken out of the team against Hibs, because it would allow Rangers’ “best player” to return?

Last season, during a generally miserable campaign, Nicolas Raskin was a rare shining light, thereby named the club’s player of the year and players’ player of the year at the end of the season awards.

As the table documents, Raskin ranked in the top five for pretty much every metric we could find last season, ranging from goals, assists and chances created, as well as passing, touches and defensive statistics, including tackles and ball recoveries.

Thus, one would assume a new manager would want to make the Belgian international a central pillar of their team, but Martin has had other ideas.

Across Rangers’ 12 matches this season, Raskin has started six, come off the bench in three and not even been among the substitutes for the other three, including the Old Firm as well as Saturday’s defeat to Hearts.

It has been widely reported that the midfielder and the manager have had a falling out, with Martin claiming this has been “resolved”, but this didn’t appear to be the case as Raskin watched on bereft from the director’s box at the weekend, with presenter Darrell Currie mystified as to how they can leave “their best player in the stand”.

Instead, Martin started Mohamed Diomandé, Connor Barron and the aforementioned Aasgaard as his midfield three, but fair to say they were ineffective.

A week ago, Raskin was on target during Belgium’s 6-0 demolition of Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier at Stade Constant Vanden Stock, completing a midfield trio alongside Youri Tielemans and Kevin De Bruyne, which isn’t bad, is it?

This has only made Rangers supporters even more irate, exclaiming if he’s good enough to start for Belgium, surely he should be starting for his club, so if Martin harbours any hopes of turning things around, he simply must reintegrate his star man ahead of Aasgaard.

O jogo 

O duelo começou agitado com os dois times em busca do gol. Cada um na sua principal característica e, com boas oportunidades de balançar a rede, mas sem sucesso.

Aos 16 minutos o placar foi inaugurado. O goleiro João Ricardo saiu errado e jogou a bola no pé de Deyverson. O atacante não perdoou e abriu o marcador, 1 a 0.

Com a necessidade de buscar o empate, o Leão se lançou ao ataque e tentou pressionar. Porém, quem teve a bola da etapa inicial foi o Cuiabá. Clayson finalizou e por muito pouco não ampliou.

Na etapa final, o Cuiabá postou o seu sistema defensivo de forma positiva e pouco deu espaço ao Fortaleza, que apostava na bola aérea. Quando conseguia levar a melhor nos levantamentos, o goleiro Walter apareceu bem.

Na pressão do Fortaleza, duas ótimas chances foram criadas. Na primeira, Silvio Romero cabeceou e viu a bola pegar no travessão. Pouco depois, Calebe soltou o pé e Walter fez milagre.

Nos minutos finais, a bola do jogo veio nos pés do Fortaleza. Guilherme chutou e viu a bola pegar na trave. No rebote, Lucas Crispim novamente e finalizou e viu o poste salvar o Cuiabá.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has praised Senne Lammens for his composed debut in goal while taking a swipe at Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for their numerous errors. The former shot-stopper welcomed the Belgian’s clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Sunderland but urged caution, insisting that true quality will only be revealed when the youngster faces adversity later in the season.

  Schmeichel praises Lammens — takes dig at Onana

  Speaking on the Monday Night Club, Schmeichel remarked: “You think about the goalkeepers that we’ve had over these last couple of years and how many goals we’ve conceded from errors – nine already this season – it’s too much. My instruction when I played was to save the team 10 points a season, not give them away. It’s nice to see a clean sheet and a solid performance because that’s something we’ve not seen for a while.”

  He continued: “This young lad [Lammens didn’t have much to do for a long time, but he did well when called upon. You could see his confidence grow after that first save and the defenders reacted well. It’s far too early to judge him though — he’s young, hardly played any competitive football, and the pressure at Manchester United can be relentless.”

  Schmeichel concluded: “He did well, it was clean and positive, things we haven’t been used to. But we’ll really see what kind of goalkeeper he is when he makes mistakes and has to respond to them. That’s when we’ll know how good he can be.”

  Lammens to retain spot against Liverpool?

  Lammens is expected to retain his place after the international break, giving him another chance to stake his claim as Amorim’s No.1. The young Belgian will be under the gun when Manchester United face off against Liverpool in the Premier League on October 19.

Aston Villa kicked off the brand new Premier League season with a 0-0 stalemate against Newcastle United.

While that, of course, isn’t exactly the most exhilarating introduction back to top-flight life, Unai Emery’s Villans would come away from the opening day contest the happier of the two sides with the drab final result, having been reduced to ten men for the final 24 minutes after Ezri Konsa was dismissed.

Still, even despite that result, the Villans must kick on in the weeks to come in order to turn results like this one into a win.

Aston Villa make enquiry to sign £25m star

Villa haven’t been the flashiest side in the chaotic window to date, with just three incomings through the door.

The cash could soon be splashed in a similarly lavish manner if reports are to be believed, with Caught Offside revealing that Emery and Co. have now enquired over signing Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

It will be difficult for Villa to get a move over the line, however, with Nottingham Forest allegedly also in talks with the exciting 20-year-old, with the Tricky Trees bidding in the region of £30m recently for the City number 82.

Moreover, further interest in Lewis’ services comes from Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur, with those named also lodging their own enquiries.

How Lewis can be Emery's next Rogers

Villa will keep their fingers crossed that they can race to the front of this ever-extending queue in the hope that they will be able to land a Morgan Rogers repeat if the two-time Premier League winner swaps the Etihad for Villa Park.

Before Rogers established himself as a top-flight “machine” donning claret and blue – as he was dubbed by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell – the England international did find himself in the same boat as Lewis in Manchester.

Unfortunately for the £100m-rated star, he would never go on to make the first-team breakthrough on the books of the Citizens, with countless loan spells greeting him, before he was officially let go of by Pep Guardiola’s men in 2023.

This must surely be a regret on the end of the early table-toppers, though, with Rogers going on to flex his muscles in some style in the West Midlands, as 17 goals and 17 assists have come his way from 79 appearances and counting.

Lewis would love for this same first-team spotlight to come down on him if he were to embark on a new challenge at Villa Park, having only started 40 of his 59 Premier League games to date at his boyhood employers, despite largely impressing when thrust into the senior mix.

He certainly stood out against Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out as City brushed off any off-season cobwebs to trounce the Old Gold 4-0 at Molineux, with Lewis getting in on the act himself when teeing up Erling Haaland for the crucial opening strike.

The lively 20-year-old was lauded as “magical” by City journalist Amos Murphy during the game, with his blistering ability to bomb forward and create openings, further putting him on the same pedestal as Rogers.

With experience of the Champions League also under his belt, Emery would be very confident in gifting Lewis plenty of first-team opportunities on his arrival, much like the Spaniard showed no hesitancy in immediately handing Rogers the senior reins last year.

This will be a testing deal to seal, but if Villa want to make more waves this summer, they should go all out to land Lewis, who has also been labelled as “exceptional” by Guardiola for his standout, bit-part offerings at his hometown side.
