West Ham now preparing official offer to sign "very prolific" £26m striker

West Ham United are now preparing an official offer for a “very prolific” striker, who is set to be available for around €30m (£26m) this summer, according to a report.

Hammers keen on signing new striker

It would be fair to say West Ham have had some bad luck when it comes to signing strikers over the years, with the likes of Sebastien Haller and Gianluigi Scamacca flattering to deceive, despite being very successful elsewhere.

Niclas Füllkrug has also struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League, scoring just three goals in his debut campaign, after struggling with injuries throughout the campaign, and with the German now 32-years-old, it could be worth bringing in a younger option this summer.

In recent days, the Irons made an approach for Metz centre-forward Idrissa Gueye, but with the 18-year-old attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, Graham Potter’s side may find it difficult to win the race for his signature.

As such, West Ham may be forced to move on to alternative options, and they are now set to intensify their efforts to sign a Serie A striker…

That is according to a report from Italy (via The Hard Tackles), which states the Hammers are now preparing an official bid for Cagliari striker Roberto Piccoli, who is set to be available for a fee of around €30m (£26m) this summer.

Piccoli is said to have attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive 2024-25 campaign, including Benfica and Fiorentina, and the Irons are now looking to steal a march on rival suitors by lodging a formal offer.

Potter’s side are scouring the market for a new striker, given that Fullkrug and Evan Ferguson failed to have the desired impact last season, with a deal for Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson also thought to be edging closer to completion.

"Very prolific" Piccoli could be ideal signing for West Ham

Wilson, of course, is already vastly experienced in the Premier League, having had stints with Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth, but the Englishman is now 33-years-old, and struggled with injuries throughout the 2024-25 campaign.

As such, it may be a wise idea to bring in a younger striker, who is more dependable, and the 24-year-old Cagliari striker could fit the bill, fresh off the back of an impressive 2024-25 season.

The Italian, who was once lauded as “very prolific” by scout Jacek Kulig, amassed ten goals and three assists for Cagliari in the Serie A last season, in what was undoubtedly the most impressive season of his career so far.

Piccoli is at the right age to be a long-term success at the London Stadium, and West Ham will be hoping they have finally found a striker capable of leading the line for years to come.

Talks held: Arsenal make approach to sign £84m Martinelli replacement

Arsenal have now held talks over a deal for an “unbelievable” forward, amid doubts over Gabriel Martinelli’s future, according to a report.

Gunners could now be ready to sell Martinelli

It has been revealed that Mikel Arteta may now be ready to sell Martinelli this summer, as the manager looks to reshuffle his squad, and AC Milan have emerged as potential suitors, with Rafael Leao’s future at the San Siro still very much up in the air.

Should the Gunners decide to cash in on the Brazilian, they would be looking to receive a fee of at least £50m, although he is currently planning to fight for his place in the starting XI, and has no plans of pushing for a move elsewhere.

It would certainly seem harsh to sell the 23-year-old, considering he has been a regular source of goals and assists over the past four seasons, but Arteta has shown he is willing to make big decisions in the past, most notably replacing Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya.

According to a report from Football Transfers, Arsenal have now held talks over a deal to sign West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus, who could seemingly be brought in as a replacement for Martinelli, as he is said to be capable of playing on both flanks.

However, the two London clubs may be some way apart in their valuation of Kudus, as he has a €100m (£84m) release clause in his West Ham contract, while the Gunners are hesitant to stump up more than €55m-€60m (£46m – £51m).

The Ghanaian is keen to leave the Hammers this summer, as he intends to play in Europe next season, meaning a move to the Emirates Stadium could be of great appeal, although Chelsea and Newcastle United are also in the race for his signature.

"Unbelievable" Kudus could excel at the Emirates

The 2024-25 campaign was not the 24-year-old’s best, picking up just five goals and three assists in the Premier League, but he was part of a West Ham side that underperformed as a whole, and the winger’s previous exploits indicate he could be a success at Arsenal.

Indeed, the former Ajax man enjoyed a very impressive debut campaign in England, amassing 14 goals and nine assists in all competitions, during which time he was lauded as “unbelievable” by teammate Michail Antonio.

Antonio was left particularly blown away by the winger’s dribbling ability, which was also on display regularly last season, despite not setting up or scoring as many goals as in previous campaigns.

There are certainly signs that Kudus could kick on at the Emirates Stadium, but that said, he should not be brought in as a direct replacement for Martinelli, considering the Brazil international is still young, and it would be very harsh to sanction his departure this summer.

Approach made: Leeds now enquire over deal for "pure class" £5m defender

Leeds United have now made an approach to sign a defender who’s “pure class”, and he could be available for a fee of just £5m, according to reporter Ben Jacobs.

Leeds eyeing new defender amid Firpo uncertainty

Junior Firpo played a key role in the Whites’ promotion, collecting four goals and ten assists in 32 Championship games, but the left-back could now be heading for the exit door, amid widespread links with La Liga side Real Betis.

While Firpo is capable of making a real impact from an attacking point of view, former Leeds man Paul Robinson believes it may be the right decision to let the defender leave this summer, given his previous struggles in the top flight.

Robinson said: “Firpo, I’ve got my concerns about. I think he’s been excellent in the Championship. But some players, the Championship is their level, and in the Premiership, before he was exposed defensively, he was well out of position many times, susceptible to goals, and teams targeted him, and I think the step-up was maybe too much for him.”

Leeds United's JuniorFirpoin action with Bristol City's Max Bird

In the Premier League, Daniel Farke’s side may have to be a bit more pragmatic than they were last season, which means the manager is looking to bring in a new left-back, who is defensively solid, rather than a threat going forward.

According to Jacobs, in an update on X, Leeds have now made an approach to sign Aston Villa’s Alex Moreno, submitting an enquiry about a deal for the left-back, who is also attracting interest from Burnley and a number of unnamed La Liga clubs.

With Moreno’s Villa contract set to expire in 2026, he is set to be available for around £5m this summer, making him an affordable option for the Championship title-winners.

"Pure class" Moreno impressed during Nottingham Forest loan

Having been deemed surplus to requirements by Unai Emery, the defender was shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, and the Spaniard managed to impress at times, with writer Lee Clarke describing his performances as “pure class”.

Clarke also added: “I confess I was uncertain about his hamstring history when he signed but there have been no ill effects in that sense so far. Moreno is established on the left in the team now and he’s a 7/10 at the very least in every single game.”

That said, the 32-year-old, who has the same agent as Illan Meslier, went on to play less of a prominent role as the season went on, often being left on the bench by Nuno, which suggests he was unable to maintain his initial levels of performance.

As such, there are doubts over whether Moreno would be a worthwhile signing for Leeds, but he could be an upgrade on Firpo from a defensive standpoint, having outperformed the left-back across some key metrics over the past year.

Leeds could sign £13m ace who was one of the best young players in the world

In what could finally see him realise his potential, Leeds United now reportedly have a genuine chance of signing a £13m+ forward who was once deemed a player destined for the very top.

Leeds preparing for Premier League

It’s a big summer for Leeds and the biggest since the arrival of the 49ers. They must get things right, too. They’ve already seen what can go wrong when promoted clubs either fail to spend or fail to recruit wisely, and they’ll be desperate to end a two-year-long trend of instant relegations in the top flight. So far, ahead of the transfer window, the extent of the task doesn’t seem lost on the 49ers, either.

Chairman Paraag Marathe has already set his ambitions high ahead of a return to the Premier League, claiming that he wants Leeds to become one of the biggest clubs in Europe and not just survive.

Leeds considering swoop for "incredible" striker who'd be their new Wood

Leeds are reportedly considering a move for a star who could be Daniel Farke’s own Chris Wood.

ByDan Emery May 21, 2025

He told reporters following Leeds’ promotion: “This was really hard to do. Two years of getting to this point, but all that hard work and all that difficulty, makes right now that much more rewarding and makes today so special. I hope I never forget this moment. I want to live in this moment as much as I can.

Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe.

“This is a journey, this is not the end. We have to keep going, this is what Leeds does. We are going to have some difficulties, but we are going to get where we want to go and we are going to be one of the best clubs in all of Europe.”

Amid recent reports linking Leeds with moves for the likes of Jamie Vardy and Caoimhin Kelleher, it seems as though Marathe’s talk is far from cheap. It doesn’t end with Kelleher and Vardy, either, with another name now mentioned as a potential target.

Leeds could sign former wonderkid Kasper Dolberg

According to Voetbal Krant, Leeds now have a genuine chance to sign Kasper Dolberg this summer. The Anderlecht forward has become somewhat of a forgotten name in recent times, but it wasn’t so long ago that he was tipped to be the next best thing. Now 27 years old and fresh from a revived season in Belgium, the Dane could get the chance to step back into the limelight.

Having scored 24 goals in 44 games for Anderlecht this season, Dolberg will reportedly cost Leeds over £13m if they want to secure his signature this summer. The move would, of course, come with its risks given the false dawns that the forward has enjoyed, but following an excellent campaign it could be one worth taking.

Included on TuttoSport’s Golden Boy top 10 alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in 2017, Dolberg should be desperate to get back into similar conversations sooner rather than later.

Real Madrid worried Liverpool will hijack £38m gem they've agreed to sign

Liverpool have a “growing interest” in completing the signing of a “crazy” talent who has already held contract negotiations with Real Madrid, leaving the Spanish club trying to speed things up.

Liverpool rivlary with Madrid continues over Huijsen deal

The Reds have almost become renowned for being relatively frugal in the transfer market under owners FGS, with both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot often tasked with working their magic with a smaller squad than some of their rivals.

This summer is reportedly going to be one of the busiest in years at Liverpool, however, with Slot set to be handed lots of funds for new signings, as they seek to replace Madrid-bound Trent Alexander-Arnold for starters, with a deal for Jeremie Frimpong nearing completion.

Reds captain Virgil van Dijk has put an element of pressure on owners FSG, saying he expects lots of money to be spent in the coming weeks and months.

The man who could have become the skipper’s successor looks to be following Alexander-Arnold to Madrid however, with the Spaniards pulling ahead in the race for Dean Huijsen. Indeed, Florentino Perez’s side have approached Bournemouth over a £50m deal and are discussing personal terms with the young defender.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

Madrid are now leading the race for the Cherries star ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, and after seemingly missing out to their European rivals again, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have turned their attentions further up the pitch.

Liverpool have "growing interest" in Messi-like youngster

According to a fresh report from Sport [via Sport Witness], Liverpool have a “growing interest” in River Plate midfielder Franco Mastantuono, who has a £38m release clause in his current deal.

The 17-year-old is considered one of Argentina’s brightest young talents, with Manchester United and Madrid also interested in signing him. In fact, Madrid even agreed a contract with the player last year, and while a deal didn’t go through then, they are now hurriedly speeding up their interest in fear of missing out to the Reds.

Barcelona SC's Gustavo Vallecilla in action with River Plate'sFrancoMastantuono

Mastantuono looks like an incredible prospect, so Liverpool should be doing all they can to beat United and Madrid to his signature in the summer window.

At just 17, the Argentine has already racked up 59 appearances for River Plate, bagging 16 goal contributions in that time (nine goals and seven assists), and analyst Ben Mattinson has called his talent “crazy”, also saying he is a “leader”.

Meanwhile, FIFA have even compared him to Lionel Messi, which is the ultimate praise: “He has a different, special aesthetic. The stretched, slender, elegant body. He receives with his foot and the game options seem to multiply. From right to left. With the inside edge or the instep. With the toe or the outside of the boot. Franco Mastantuono, the new promise -figure- of River Plate, 17 years old, has the complete repertoire.”

An attacking midfielder by trade, Mastantuono could arrive at Liverpool as a squad player to begin with, but given the heights he is reaching in his homeland, he could end up becoming a superstar at Anfield.

New Hazard & Costa: Chelsea's young striker will be unreal next to Estevao

Like all clubs of their size and with their history, Chelsea have had some incredible players represent them over the years.

Moreover, those players have often formed brilliant duos, such as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba and John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho.

Another pairing that enjoyed immense success during their time at Stamford Bridge was Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, who played 107 matches together, averaged two points per game and won two Premier League titles.

So, fans should be excited that the club might be able to recreate a partnership similar to that one with the sensational Estêvãoand one of Cobham’s most promising gems.

Estêvão's start to his Chelsea career

There has long been plenty of hype around Estêvão and the kind of player he could develop into.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

In fact, just a few months before Chelsea signed him, respected analyst Ben Mattinson labelled the teenage phenom a “future Ballon d’Or winner.”

Of course, there is still a long way to go before that could happen, but so far this season, it would probably be fair to say that the young Brazilian has met, or even exceeded, expectations.

For example, in 17 appearances, totalling just 740 minutes, he has already scored five goals and provided one assist.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.83 games, or more importantly, every 123.33 minutes.

Furthermore, the Franca-born superstar in the making has also already shown an ability to thrive and score in the club’s biggest games.

For example, he came on against Liverpool a couple of months ago and scored the winner and then, against Barcelona this week, he scored the all-important second goal to take the game away from the Spanish side.

Finally, on top of the output, the former Palmeiras prospect also passes the eye-test with flying colours, as Hazard did; he’s a tremendously fun footballer to watch, and it feels like something is going to happen with a ball at his feet.

Now, as if one young superstar in the making wasn’t enough, Chelsea also have a goalscoring machine in the academy who could become Estêvão’s Costa.

The Cobham gem who could be Estêvão's Costa

As always seems to be the case, Chelsea have plenty of seriously exciting youngsters coming through the academy at the moment, with chief among them, and the player who could form a game-breaking partnership with Estevao, being Shumaira Mheuka.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion prospect joined the Blues’ youth setup in 2022 and, in the time since, has become one of the most promising strikers in academy football.

Now, that might sound hyperbolic, but his output over the last couple of years proves that it very much is not.

For example, despite being just 16 at the start of last season, he ended the campaign with 11 goals and three assists in 30 appearances across the u18s and u21s.

Yet, while that is an impressive return, he’s taken another massive step forward this year.

So far, the Birmingham-born monster has scored 13 goals and provided three assists in 13 appearances for the junior sides, totalling 1,067 minutes.

Appearances

63

Goals

34

Goal Involvements per Match

0.68

That means the prolific number nine is averaging 1.23 goal involvements every game, or one every 66.68 minutes, which is surely a rate of return that warrants him getting more first-team action this season.

It’s not just at club level where the youngster is making a name, though: in 20 appearances for England’s u19s, he has chalked up a huge tally of 14 goals and three assists.

With numbers like these, it’s not hard to see why respected talent scout Jacek Kulig has described the youngster as “the future of Chelsea and English football.”

Ultimately, while it might not happen this year, Chelsea need to play Estevao alongside Mheuka at some point, as they could end up being the club’s new Hazard and Costa.

All the records Shubman Gill can break against England

Most runs in a series, most hundreds in a series and more

Shubham Agarwal08-Jul-20251:56

Aaron: Gill showing signs of a great leader

Shubman Gill has made a terrific start to the ongoing five-Test series in England. Leading India for the first time, Gill has smashed three hundreds (which includes a double) in two matches, and already has 585 runs at an average of 146.25. His twin tons in Birmingham helped him take down several records, including the highest match aggregate for an Indian batter and many more. Here are more records that he can break with three more Tests to go.

Most runs in a series as captain

Gill is in line to break Don Bradman’s 88-year-old record for most runs as captain in a Test series. Bradman amassed 810 runs in five Tests in the 1936-37 Ashes, averaging 90, including three hundreds. Gill is 225 runs away from Bradman’s mark.Coincidentally, that was also Bradman’s first Test series as captain. Hence, Gill will also rewrite the record for most runs in a debut series as captain if he passes Bradman’s tally. Bradman had a top score of 270 in that series and Gill has already scored 269 in the ongoing series in England. The record for the most runs in a series for an Indian captain is with Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 732 in six Tests against West Indies in 1978-79. Gill needs 148 more to get past Gavaskar.

Most runs in a series

Although a little farfetched, another Bradman record is in sight for Gill. Bradman hammered 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes, which is the most by any batter in a Test series. Gill need another 390 runs to break that record.Gill has a head start advantage over Bradman, who scored only 394 runs in the first two Tests of that Ashes, compared to Gill’s 585.The same record for India belongs to Gavaskar. He scored 774 runs playing four of the five Tests against West Indies in 1971. Gill is 189 runs behind.Shubman Gill is in the middle of a highly productive Test series•Getty Images

Most hundreds in a series

The West Indies great Clyde Walcott made five centuries in a home series against Australia in 1955. Gill is two hundreds short of levelling that feat with three Tests to go. Like Gill, Walcott also scored three tons in the first two Tests of that series – 108 in Kingston followed by twin hundreds in the second Test in Port-of-Spain. Walcott then scored twin hundreds again in the fifth Test in Kingston to take his century count to five.Related

The most hundreds in a series as captain belongs to Bradman – four centuries against India in 1947.For India, Gavaskar again holds both these records with four hundreds each against West Indies – in 1971 as a player and in 1978-79 as captain.

Fastest to 1000 runs as captain

Another Bradman record that Gill could possibly break. Bradman took 11 innings to complete 1000. Gill needs 415 runs in six innings to topple him.The Indian record is with Gavaskar. Beginning his captaincy stint with a hundred against New Zealand in 1976, Gavaskar took 14 innings to complete 1000 Test runs as captain. He racked up five hundreds in this span with a top score of 205. Gill has nine innings in hand to beat Gavaskar’s record.

Most runs in a series against England

Yashasvi Jaiswal has the record for the most runs by an India batter in a series against England. He pummeled 712 runs in a five-match home series in 2024, averaging 89 with the help of two double-hundreds. Gill is in contention to get past that tally, needing 127 more. The record for most runs in a series in England for an Indian batter belongs to Rahul Dravid who scored 602 in 2002 with three tons. Gill is in touching distance of that – only 18 runs short.Virat Kohli sits on top of the list as captain, scoring 655 runs leading India in a home series against England in 2016. Gill is 91 runs away.

England's Ashes squad have pace in abundance, but do they have the miles?

England are banking on their young fast bowlers, but can they pit raw speed against Australia’s experienced attack?

Matt Roller15-Nov-2025First it was Stuart Broad. Then it was James Anderson. And now it is Chris Woakes. Between those three international retirements, England have lost exactly 1500 wickets worth of Test match experience since the 2023 Ashes; the septet of fast bowlers that they have taken to Australia for the 2025-26 series have barely a third of that figure (566) between them.It is England’s first Ashes tour without Anderson in their ranks since the 2002-03 series – before Jacob Bethell was even born – and their first without Broad since 2006-07. Ben Stokes accounts for more than half of the 205 Test caps shared between the seven seamers on this tour; Jofra Archer, who has played 15 Tests in six years, is their third most-capped quick. It is a clear contrast to Australia, who will rely on a trio who can boast over 1000 Test wickets between them – but whose bodies are finally showing signs of age. They will both hope to play roles later in the series but Pat Cummins (309 wickets) and Josh Hazlewood (295) are both out of Friday’s first Test, leaving Mitchell Starc (402) as the spearhead.Related

But England’s hope is that the quality and depth of their attack will trump experience. It was only four years ago that they sent seven seamers to Australia with 1547 Test wickets between them and were thrashed 4-0; since then, both Aamer Jamal (18 wickets at 20.44) and Shamar Joseph (13 wickets at 17.30) have led touring attacks in Australia in their maiden Test series. The last time England won in Australia, in 2010-11, only Anderson and Broad among their six seamers had even ten previous Test caps before the start of the series. Yet their rookies thrived: Chris Tremlett took 17 wickets in three Tests after Broad went home injured, while Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn shared 25 between them across five.

The key ingredient in the 2025-26 attack – which has so often been absent in previous England squads to tour Australia – is pace. Six of their seven seamers have been clocked above 90mph/145kph in Test cricket – Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Stokes, Josh Tongue and Mark Wood. Matthew Potts, the lone exception, is no slouch himself.”It is probably one of the quickest attacks we’ve sent out there, if not the quickest,” says Neil Killeen, who has played a key role in their development as the ECB’s elite pace-bowling coach. The make-up of the attack is the result of a deliberate attempt by Rob Key, England’s managing director, to reprogram attitudes towards fast bowling across the English system. “It’s not like we are going to go there with the same formula and expect different results,” said Joe Root, who captained England to 4-0 defeats in their last two Ashes tours.Key has made the regeneration of England’s pace attack his priority in the past 18 months. “I don’t care how many wickets you take,” he told the in a deliberately provocative interview, shortly before moving Anderson on. “I want to know how hard you are running in, how hard you are hitting the pitch, and are you able to sustain pace at 85-88mph?”He has unashamedly taken inspiration from Australia, and described their ability to keep Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood fresh and fit across formats for so long as “the holy grail” earlier this year. Mark Wood, England’s fastest bowler ever, sees things similarly: “We’ve tried to change from the norm of England… to Australia’s vision of fast bowling,” he told the .There go our heroes: that’s 1500 Test wickets walking off into the sunset together•ECB via Getty ImagesBut the start of the transition can be traced back to February 2022, immediately after England’s 4-0 defeat in the 2021-22 Ashes. Andrew Strauss, as interim director of cricket, left both Broad and Anderson out in order to give Woakes and Wood opportunities to lead the attack, while Matt Fisher and Saqib Mahmood both made their Test debuts. It was a brave, controversial call with significant unintended consequences. England toiled hard in high-scoring draws in the first two Tests against West Indies and were then bundled out by Kyle Mayers in the third. A 1-0 series defeat – leaving England with one win in their last 17 Tests – made Root’s position as captain untenable, prompting a complete overhaul in leadership.Key, Stokes and Brendon McCullum were appointed to the three most influential roles in English cricket, and have since overseen the development of a fast-bowling attack that looks decidedly un-English. Broad and Anderson both returned in the short term, but England made a point of growing their fast-bowling depth right from the start of the new regime.Potts debuted in the first “Bazball” series, against New Zealand in June 2022, and three further fast bowlers in the Ashes squad have emerged since – Tongue, Atkinson and Carse. All four share similar attributes: they are tall, quick right-arm bowlers who rely on seam movement more than swing, and have formed strong relationships off the field. They reflected on their rise last month while training at England’s performance centre in Loughborough. “We said to each other: it’s quite nice that we’re all in a similar mould,” Carse said. “It’s quite nice to have good people and good mates away from the game who you are representing your country with, and to go to an away Ashes all together is pretty exciting.”Rookie monster: Tongue is England’s top wicket-taker so far this year, but all of his 19 wickets have come at home•Getty ImagesIt has vindicated the decision to usher Anderson into retirement, which was made explicitly with this series in mind: “Giving people game time now will hopefully put us in a strong position to go to Australia and win the urn back,” Stokes explained last July. It was an unpopular call, but the right one: for all Anderson’s brilliance, it was unthinkable that he could lead the attack at 43.He stayed around the team for the next six months as a bowling coach, passing on a lifetime of knowledge to the next generation, but has since made way. Not that Anderson is fully sold on the group that has replaced him: “I don’t see a leader of the attack,” he said on his podcast after England named their squad. “There’s not that experience there.”Key has also launched the ECB’s “pace project”, working with performance director Ed Barney, player identification lead David Court, and Killeen. Internal research suggests a clear correlation between pace and success at Test level, and England have attempted to fast-track their best prospects via the Lions programme.Sonny Baker has been handed a central contract for 2025-26 after 43 senior appearances, while Eddie Jack, Tom Lawes, Josh Hull and Mitchell Stanley have all won development deals. “It’s not about trying to make everybody 90mph bowlers,” Killeen says. “[But] we want quick bowlers who can produce lateral movement, who can create bounce, and who have accuracy.”Pace is not the only weapon that England have available to them. Archer’s potency against left-handers is well established, and Australia are likely to field five in their top eight. Atkinson’s lateral movement makes him difficult to leave alone, while Carse is a rare English bowler who feels more comfortable using the Kookaburra ball than the Dukes.Stokes has rarely bowled better than he did against India, after using an injury layoff to work on his alignment at the crease. Tongue’s beyond-perpendicular action makes him awkward to face, and he has taken a wicket every 44.1 balls in his first six Tests. Wood is a skilled exponent of reverse swing, and Potts is England’s most accurate seamer.Matthew Potts is the closest England have to a traditional English seamer in the Ashes squad•PA Images/GettyYet there is a nagging suspicion that England might be late to the party. Australian conditions have changed in recent seasons, with “curators” leaving more grass on pitches and the pace of play accelerating dramatically: on average, seamers have taken a wicket every 47 balls across the last four Test summers, compared to one every 61 balls in the previous four.Where England will turn if confronted with a green top is unclear. Despite Woakes’ record in Australia (16 wickets at 51.68), he might well have come into the picture had a shoulder injury not hastened his retirement, while Sam Cook’s unconvincing performance against Zimbabwe on debut leaves Potts as the closest thing to a traditional English seamer in the squad. It is a hole that really ought to have been filled by Ollie Robinson, a man with 76 Test wickets at 22.92, but he has slipped so far down the pecking order that he was not even in the conversation for selection after England lost patience with his attitude and fitness. His presence in Australia, playing grade cricket in Sydney, is a timely reminder of what might have been. But the question on which the series will hinge is how often England will have Archer, Stokes and Wood available to them. All three have struggled badly with injuries: Archer has played two Tests since February 2021; Wood has not bowled competitively since the Champions Trophy; and Stokes has only completed one full series as an allrounder in the last three years.Wood and Archer are lethal when fit, but given their return from long injury layoffs, are unlikely to feature in all of the Ashes Tests•Getty ImagesThe optimistic reading of their limited involvement is that the ECB have managed their workloads to ensure that all three are ready to hit the ground running in what McCullum has labelled “the biggest series of all of our lives”. In reality, there is next to no chance that all three will feature in five Tests out of five. England will need to tap into their squad depth. The tour will be a significant physical challenge. No matter the recent changes in conditions, Australia’s oppressive heat makes it a gruelling place to bowl, particularly once the Kookaburra ball has gone soft. For all their seamers’ efforts against India this summer, England ultimately ran out of steam at The Oval, in marked contrast to the irrepressible Mohammed Siraj. And unlike their opponents, England do not have a world-class spinner they can rely on. Australia have lingering injury doubts heading into the first Test but know that Nathan Lyon can settle in for long spells. Shoaib Bashir has often fulfilled a similar role, but his economy rate (3.78) reflects the frequency with which he bowls hit-me balls. It remains abundantly clear that for all of England’s improvement under Stokes and McCullum, everything will have to fall into place if they are to regain the urn. “Australia are obviously the favourites,” Wood said recently. “They’re very hard to beat in their own conditions. They’ve shown that for a number of years: we haven’t managed to win many games here at all.”It is that unavoidable truth that has prompted England to put this attack together: after 13 defeats in their last 15 Tests in Australia, there was no point opting for more of the same. Their fast-bowling “pack” features pace and potential in abundance; now, it is time for precision and performance.
