The club’s January transfer window plans are becoming increasingly focused on three key priorities — a defender, midfielder and forward (Sky Sports).

The urgency for a striker stems largely from the ongoing issues surrounding Niclas Fullkrug’s persistent injury problems, which have severely limited his availability and impact for the Hammers since his move last year.

Fullkrug was brought in with high hopes as a reliable goal-scoring option to lead the line, but his torrid injury record has prevented him from consistently delivering those expected contributions.

Time and again, injuries have sidelined Fullkrug, and this inconsistency has left West Ham very short of choices upfront.

West Ham "offered" Brazil duo Pedro and Kaio Jorge

Now, according to Hammers News and journalist Graeme Bailey, you can add Brazilian strikers Pedro and Kaio Jorge to West Ham’s list of potential targets this winter.

Pedro, who’s scored 15 goals for Flamengo during this 2025 season, once plied his trade for Fiorentina in Europe but has spent the majority of his career in South America — where he’s earned six caps for the national team.

Jorge’s scored a seismic 20 goals for Cruzeiro this year, and the 23-year-old ex-Juventus sensation is still yet to reach his prime.

Jorge only has one senior appearance for Brazil so far, but considering his stellar 2025 campaign, Carlo Ancelotti will certainly be keeping a keen eye on the striker ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Bailey reports that West Ham have held discussions with agents about signing Pedro and Jorge, with Nuno’s side “offered” the duo by representatives.

That is as far as it’s gone, but there is reason to believe shopping in the Brazilian Serie A market could prove fruitful.

Jorge carries a market value of just £15 million according to Transfermarkt, while Pedro’s value comes in at around £17.5 million — making them pretty affordable options.

They’re also both represented by Bertolucci Sports, an agency that’s helped Brazilian talents like Gabriel Magalhaes, Bruno Guimaraes and Matheus Cunha seal moves to the Premier League in recent years.

There’s a real sense of optimism building at Arsenal Football Club that this year could finally be their year, with Mikel Arteta’s men the current pace setters in the Premier League.

The Gunners sit top of England’s top flight after the first ten outings of 2025/26, only losing once and currently enjoying a nine-game winning run across all competitions.

Saturday’s victory over Burnley was their eighth of the league campaign, keeping their fourth successive league clean sheet – now only conceding three goals in the Premier League.

Their summer dealings have no doubt aided their success in recent weeks, with Arteta now having a squad full of incredible talent, but more importantly, strength in depth.

One of the players already at the Emirates before the summer transfer window has since seen a decline in performance levels despite the added quality around him in North London.

Bukayo Saka’s decline in form at Arsenal in 2025/26

Over the last couple of years, winger Bukayo Saka has firmly been Arsenal’s star man, with the Englishman often tasked with providing the goods within the final third.

Whilst he suffered a serious hamstring injury last campaign, the 24-year-old still managed to achieve a total of 25 combined goals and assists in his 37 appearances across all competitions.

However, this season is yet to ignite for the Hale End academy graduate, with Saka currently unable to reach the high standards that he’s set for himself at the Emirates.

In his first eight league outings in 2025/26, the England international has only registered two goals and has yet been able to register any assists at present.

His recent performance against Burnley saw the forward blank once again, which has seen his goalless run extend to three games in England’s top-flight.

Saka was also able to register just 34 touches of the ball during his 90-minute performance – a tally that was the lowest of any player from either side at Turf Moor.

He also failed to complete a single dribble or create any chances, further highlighting his lack of impact within the final third despite the Gunners securing a 2-0 triumph.

The Arsenal player who’s now becoming Arteta’s best player

There’s no denying Saka will return to his best form in the coming months, but his recent lack of impact has seen numerous other Arsenal players take the headlines.

Declan Rice has been hugely influential from set pieces, often being the man to provide the goods from dead-ball situations – as seen by his tally of three assists so far this campaign.

However, the 26-year-old turned goalscorer against the Clarets on Saturday afternoon, adding to his tally and netting his second Premier League goal this term.

Viktor Gyokeres and David Raya have both had impacts at opposite ends of the pitch, as seen by their respective tallies of four goals and seven clean sheets to date.

Whilst both the aforementioned trio have all made a positive impact of late, none have quite matched the levels produced by centre-back Gabriel, who has been a real dominant force at both ends.

The Brazilian centre-back, who joined from Lille in 2020, would no doubt have been signed to provide defensive quality, but he’s now making a name for himself in the final third.

The 27-year-old has already achieved a staggering total of five combined goals and assists in his first 15 outings in 2025/26, with his latest coming against Burnley this weekend.

He rose highest at the back post from Rice’s corner, before nodding the ball across the face of goal and into the path of Gyokeres, who tapped in from close range.

However, Gabriel, is the main man. He has also dominated at the back – subsequently playing a key role in the club’s tally of seven league clean sheets during the early months of 2025/26.

He made 11 defensive contributions, which included nine clearances and one tackle and an interception made, further highlighting his ability without the ball at his feet.

The Brazilian also completed 93% of the passes he attempted, whilst also registering a total of 72 touches – numbers which make him the perfect modern-day centre-back.

His ability to be outstanding at the back, coupled with his tremendous goalscoring threat, has made him one of the most well-rounded talents in world football at present.

If the Gunners are to end their two-decade wait for a Premier League title, Gabriel will likely be a key component to any of their success – especially if he can maintain his current form. As Jamie Carragher put it, he’s now the frontrunner to be named PFA Player of the Year & he’s now “the most influential player in the Premier League.”

As for Saka, his lack of form will no doubt be a concern, but if he can return to his own incredible heights, the club’s chance of claiming title glory in May will no doubt increase tenfold.

Arsenal’s battle with injuries has taken a further turn for the worse after Declan Rice was ruled out of Wednesday night’s Champions League meeting with Club Brugge. The midfielder is a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s plans but was deemed too ill to travel to Belgium, which has deepened the sense of strain within a squad already stretched thin.

Injuries a major concern for Arteta

Rice had fallen unwell shortly after the weekend defeat at Aston Villa, and despite attempts to aid his recovery, the 26-year-old was unable to join the travelling party. He is not the only major absentee. William Saliba, who has been managing an ongoing issue for several weeks, remains unavailable and will miss yet another marquee European assignment. Leandro Trossard, who had only just returned from injury to score against Villa, has suffered a fresh knock and had to be withdrawn before the final whistle at Villa Park. Arteta admitted he does not expect the Belgian’s recovery to be long-term but said there was no chance of him featuring in Bruges. The Gunners are also without Kai Havertz, defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and Cristhian Mosquera, and have only just welcomed back striker Viktor Gyokeres after his own spell on the sidelines.

Speaking to reporters, Arteta said: "Declan was ill. He was quite sick after the game, and he hasn’t travelled with us. William is still not available, and Leo again picked another knock in an area where he had the issue, and I don't expect that it's going to be long, but unfortunately, he cannot be here."

In an illustration of the mounting physical toll, Arsenal have altered their Champions League squad to accommodate the returning Gabriel Jesus. The Brazilian forward had been sidelined since January following surgery on his cruciate ligament, but has forced his way back ahead of schedule. His reintroduction comes at the expense of 15-year-old midfielder Max Dowman, who suffered an injury while playing for Arsenal’s Under-21 side against Manchester United over the weekend.

Arteta added: "Yes, so first of all, unfortunately, Max [Dowman] picked up an injury last weekend and had to come off. So he did some scans and he is going to be out for weeks and then we have the situation of Gabi [Jesus], who we were expecting to be training with us by the end of December. Gabi has been pushing every single day and he kept telling everybody 'I am going to be earlier, earlier, earlier' and he has done it. 

"So thanks to his work and all the work that the medical staff have done in all these months, and we had the possibility to make a swap there and we have done it. Yes, on one side, you see Max and the situation and on the other, you see the joy and how happy Gabi is to be back in the Champions League."

Overtraining claims addressed

With so many key figures unavailable, Arteta was asked whether the club’s escalating injury list is a symptom of excessive training demands. The manager dismissed the notion outright, arguing that the relentless match calendar leaves little room to train meaningfully.

"Not training, no, because we don't have time to train," he said. "So, training is not there. But obviously, the fact that you are missing players, you are loading other players more. That's a consequence of that and it's a really dangerous. The fact that we have some others who have long-term contracts that haven't been with us since the beginning of the season. But, yeah, it's a test for the team, and so far, we have reacted very, very well to that."

Man City set sights on Yaya Toure-esque midfielder

Despite his well-documented fallout with Pep Guardiola, Yaya Toure is undoubtedly a Man City legend, winning three Premier League titles, three EFL Cups and one FA Cup during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

The Ivorian, who is now working as Saudi Arabia’s assistant manager, posed a threat going forward throughout his time in England, scoring a whopping 20 goals during the 2013-14 Premier League season, while also amassing nine assists.

Since then, City’s style of play has changed, with Guardiola’s side reliant on Erling Haaland to provide the majority of their goals, and the Norwegian certainly hasn’t disappointed so far this season, averaging 1.05 goals per 90 in the Premier League, having found the back of the net 15 times.

However, Man City have now joined the race for an up-and-coming central midfielder with shades of Toure, according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states they have identified Trabzonspor’s Christ Inao Oulai as a priority target.

Bayern Munich and Manchester United are also rivalling City for the 19-year-old’s signature, with all three clubs identifying him as one of their key teenage targets in Europe.

In his hometown of Yopougon in the Ivory Coast, the teenager is known as ‘Le Petit Yaya’, while City view him as a long-term partner for Rodri in midfield, and believe he could replace the Spaniard on a long-term basis.

Christ Inao Oulai already a "top-level midfielder"

Former Premier League midfielder Michael Essien is a keen admirer of the Trabzonspor star, saying: “He’s a top-level midfielder, and he’s only 19 years old. I hope to see him one day wearing the Chelsea jersey.”

The two-time Ivory Coast international has emerged as a key player for the Turkish side this season, displaying his attacking prowess by chipping in with one goal and two assists in eight Super Lig matches.

Bernardo Silva’s future at Man City is up in the air, given that his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and it has been suggested that Guardiola is willing to let the Portugal international move on.

As such, it could be a savvy move to bring in a central midfielder with attacking qualities in January or the summer, and Inao Oulai is exhibiting very promising signs in the Super Lig.

Leeds United fans headed into the half-time interval against Aston Villa pleased with their team’s overall fight and desire on show.

On top of the energy and application being there, Lukas Nmecha’s bundled opener gifted the Whites a slim 1-0 lead.

But, everything went pear-shaped for Daniel Farke and Co in a worrying second half that saw Villa come out and display their obvious Premier League quality, which, in tow, saw the West Yorkshire giants crumble to a 2-1 loss.

Farke will be extremely unsure about his future in the Elland Road hot seat, with several of his key players letting him down in that disastrous second 45 minutes.

Even the memorable days of Marcelo Bielsa had their poor moments, too, with Gaetano Berardi often sticking out as a liability as the Whites attempted to return to the Premier League, before the South American would clinch the Championship title.

What went wrong for Berardi at Leeds

Despite Berardi’s reputation for being a rash individual when donning Leeds white, the central defender is fondly remembered to this day at Elland Road as a character who gave “everything” for the shirt, as Bielsa once noted.

Lining up all along the defence when needed, the one-time Switzerland international bowed out from West Yorkshire with two goals and seven assists from 157 appearances, leading to an emotional farewell come the close of the 2020/21 season in the Premier League.

However, this isn’t to say Berardi wasn’t a liability when it came to his hot-headedness, with the former number 28 picking up a ridiculous seven red cards, one of which came during Leeds’ playoff semi-final collapse at the hands of Frank Lampard’s Derby County during the 2018/19 season.

Obviously, it was a team effort that culminated in Jack Marriott stealing a late winner to send the Rams to Wembley, but Leeds did have to play the final exchanges down a man due to the recklessness of the full-blooded defender, with Leeds great Eddie Gray once even admitting that he often ‘shut’ his eyes when Berardi went full steam ahead with challenge, largely due to his notorious disciplinary record.

Gray said in full: “There was a few challenges when he was going in after being booked, and I shut my eyes. I thought, ‘No!’ but he pulled back and did the right thing. There comes a time in your career when ‘I shouldn’t be doing that’ because you’re letting yourself down, the manager down, the team down and the supporters down.”

Ultimately, that rash nature resulted in Berardi only being handed two Premier League chances for the Whites, before being let go of, with the now retired defender admitting, when looking back on his Leeds career, that he just couldn’t stem the “fire inside me.”

Fast forwarding back to the present, Leeds may now have another Berardi on their books.

Farke might well be persisting with players now that just aren’t cut out for the intensity of the Premier League week in, week out.

Indeed, while Brenden Aaronson does show flashes of immense quality here and there in the top division, it’s clear from his goalless showing against Villa that he isn’t an established Premier League talent for a reason, as just one of his five dribbles came off.

On the contrary, Emery has the likes of Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen at his disposal, who can regularly punish teams at a moment’s notice.

The England international would end up being Villa’s match-winner when he delicately placed this free-kick past a stationary Lucas Perri, but he was not helped by Pascal Struijk rashly tackling Ross Barkley for this free-kick to be given in an ideal spot on the pitch.

To make matters worse for the Dutchman, he also spurned a header late on that was comfortably saved by Emiliano Martinez, as Struijk’s days now begin to look numbered as a regular in the heart of Farke’s defence.

This isn’t to say, much like with the Berardi example, that Struijk hasn’t had some great moments over the year donning Leeds white, with the 26-year-old helping himself to eight goals in Championship action.

But, it could now be a case that the ex-Ajax youngster has overstayed his welcome as a Premier League starter at Elland Road, with only 13 clean sheets coming his way across four top-flight campaigns, backing up claims by journalist Phil Hay that he is not “Premier League quality.”

Leeds Live reporter Isaac Johnson would state in his post-match debrief after Villa that Struijk was regularly “caught out of position” and looked prone to a mistake, with Berardi also generating the same feeling of unease with his unpredictable showings for the club.

This is not the first time Struijk has been guilty of an error-ridden performance, with both goals at Spurs deflecting off the unfortunate defender. Still, the Dutchman could have been closer to Mohammed Kudus when he was allowed to have a pop at goal.

The match against Burnley also highlighted the defender’s susceptibility to aerial contests. As the Clarets took the lead, Kyle Walker swung in a lovely delivery, but neither Joe Rodon nor Struijk communicated properly which allowed Lesley Ugochukwu to ghost in and head home. As the first defender, it should have been up to the latter to deal with the situation but he didn’t read the flight of the ball well at all.

With Manchester City and Chelsea to come next, Farke will have to seriously consider dropping his underperforming dud if he doesn’t want to be on the receiving end of two depressing drubbings, with the beginning of the end for Struijk at Leeds now coming into view.

Arsenal had faced newly promoted sides on two occasions already this season and they swept them aside with ease.

Mikel Arteta’s men welcomed Leeds United to the Emirates Stadium in the early knockings of the campaign and sent out a message, dispatching them 5-0.

Last weekend, the Gunners faced Burnley and while they didn’t thrash them, it was another routine win for the league leaders.

So, when they travelled to the final newly promoted side of 2025/26 in the form of Sunderland, Arteta’s side knew they were going to find life a bit tougher.

The Black Cats have been the story of the Premier League season to date and they showcased that on Saturday, battling to an incredibly hard-earned 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Arsenal were not at their best but credit where credit is due; Sunderland are a mighty fine team.

What went wrong for Arsenal against Sunderland

The Gunners came into this clash having not conceded a goal for eight games. Their defensive record was remarkable, but it had to come to an end sometime. That time was now.

Regis Le Bris’ team have been phenomenal in the early stages of the new term and demonstrated why they look very unlikely to suffer relegation. In short, they looked like the best collective team the north Londoners have faced all season.

It was a familiar face in the form of Granit Xhaka who helped down his former colleagues but he wasn’t the only ex-Arsenal player on the field to make an impact.

Indeed, former Hale Ender, Dan Ballard, made the most noteworthy impact. He hadn’t played a single first-team game for the Gunners before joining Sunderland in a £2m deal but he’s more than made his mark in the north east.

He scored that last-gasp goal against Coventry City in the Championship play-off semi-finals and has come in clutch again since Le Bris’ men were promoted.

Ballard’s finest game in a Sunderland shirt was reserved for his former employers. It was the colossal centre-back who powered how the game’s opening goal and it was he who supplied Brian Brobbey’s late equaliser.

Arsenal were not at the races in the first half but they did come back fighting in the second period. It was a noticeably better performance from the league leaders who levelled courtesy of Bukayo Saka.

The winger has struggled for form in the early parts of 2025/26 but this was perhaps his finest league display of the season to date. His goal, specifically as it was on his so-called weaker foot, was simply world-class.

Saka had spurned two golden opportunities to score against Burnley a week ago but this was much more like it from the club’s talisman.

Still, as he has been in recent weeks, Saka was upstaged once more by Belgian Leandro Trossard. It looked for all the world as though the winger would exit the club in the summer as Arsenal targeted reinforcements in attack but due to a plethora of injuries has become a vital player again. His strike to put Arteta’s team in front was one of his best since joining from Brighton.

Yet, in very uncharacteristic fashion, the visitors struggled at the back. For both goals, they struggled to clear their lines and the backline didn’t lose one duel but two duels in the build-up to the last-gasp equaliser. Brobbey beat Gabriel Magalhaes to the ball and goalkeeper David Raya was left stranded.

So, the international may break may well have come at just the right time. It will give Arsenal a chance to reset and potentially get some of their injured players back.

For Sunderland, Ballard was imperious. After all, he did have something to prove.

The Gunners never gave him an opportunity to strut his stuff at the Emirates but at the Stadium of Light, he has found a home for himself.

He was dominant, he was colossal and arguably, the best player on the pitch. Truth be told, he outplayed one of the best players in the whole of Europe this season; Gabriel.

The Brazilian has been the glue that has bound everything together for Arsenal and in the words of Jamie Carragher, he has “been the most influential player” in the division.

Well, on Saturday, it was his worst performance of the campaign to date. Handed a 5/10 match rating by GOAL, they lamented the centre-back’s involvement in the equalising goal.

While Gabriel is usually so mean, so fierce in the duel, he was bullied on this occasion and was left to feel rather sorry for himself having tried to win a foul.

Man of the hour, Mr Brobbey, got across the big and tough Brazilian and rather made him look like a schoolboy. Very few attackers can do that to Gabriel but he was outmuscled and left pleading with the referee to give a foul. It was not a foul, Arsenal’s number 6 had just been outplayed “when it mattered most” in the words of Arsenal writer and content creator Jamie Kent.

Gabriel didn’t do much wrong up to that point, but he was rattled in a way we rarely see from one of Arsenal’s standout players.

While the former Lille central defender did win both of his ground duels on the evening, he only won five of his eight aerial battles, suggesting that this was indeed a tougher day at the office.

There is not much that the centre-back needs to improve but this was the third instance, all of which have led to goals this season, that have seen Gabriel lose a duel in the build-up to a goal.

He let Erling Haaland turn him too easily during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City a few months ago when the Norwegian scored and Gabriel was also at fault the last time Arsenal conceded prior to the Sunderland game. Coincidentally, that also came in the north east. In a similar fashion, the Brazil international looked to bait a foul from the centre-forward and it simply wasn’t forthcoming.

On that occasion, the towering Nick Woltemade simply battered him out the way and the same could be said of Brobbey on Saturday.

He’s not usually one to shy away from things but on two occasions now he’s let Arsenal down in big moments. He has also delivered some imperious moments this season, but if he does want to be considered the best defender in the land, incidents like this one must be eradicated from his game.

That being said, it does rather say it all that this was Gabriel’s worst performance of the season. He was still pretty rock solid besides that error.

Cheteshwar Pujara has retired from “all forms of Indian cricket” effective immediately.
